I think the whole point is that to an increasing degree making stuff requires fewer people.
Analogy with agriculture ("growing stuff"): we're growing tons of food but fewer and fewer people are involved. Things change.
That's a farce. Low Paid Assembly of Pre-Made Parts plants are the same as Fast Food Restaurants. No skill, No high pay, No Degreed Engineers. Cheap.
