One of the main reasons middle class and poor people voted for trump is that they wanted to shake things up. It's sort of a synonym for 'punch in the nose.'
I think I understand that but in reality they voted for a New York billionaire who represented one of the two establishment parties, who then assembled the wealthiest administration in history.
And even when a boom hasn’t impacted them they still feel like they’re winning. Makes sense to me.
They serve their politician (Trump) rather than him serving them in return for their support. It’s a strange phenomenon.
It's an interesting phenomenon.
Much of it is how Trump speaks like them - it's 180 degrees from the polished politico-talk of guys like Obama and Romney.
Another part is race - trump unabashedly stands up for white people. And whether we want to admit it or not, white people feel aggrieved and persecuted.
And another part is just xenophobia and nationalism...no other president will wave a big stick this much and insult other nations. That makes weak people feel proud. Just human nature.
And then the biggest factor: Trump is unabashedly against and hated by the coastal elites who look down on Youngstowners. Ohioans love poking the elites in the eye and no one has ever done that as well as trump.

How much money do you think some representative no one has heard of before a few days ago can raise without a major backing political party behind him?
Now, how much money do you think a major political party can spend to destroy his name in his home state and promote their own candidate?
And to add to this, why would he defect from the R party? It's way more profitable to him to just shut up and get in line in exchange for promise of some committee chair seat one day. No reason to commit political suicide like that.
Maybe he's just one of those rare politicians with bravery and integrity.
Just kidding.
I definitely understand your points.
The one about coastal elites is ironic though, as there are few as elite and coastal as Trump.
Trump:
Looks like Bernie Sanders is history. Sleepy Joe Biden is pulling ahead and think about it, I’m only here because of Sleepy Joe and the man who took him off the 1% trash heap, President O! China wants Sleepy Joe BADLY!
Trump's constant commentary about Democrat candidates is both wrong and illogical. He is the POTUS and not a Fox news pundit. His insults will have no effect on the primaries, so why not wait until a candidate is chosen and then focus on him/her? What he is doing only adds to the perception that he is a part time president.
yeah, until you look at Trump's history - he is not from Manhattan - he's from Queens. he was never accepted by the elegant sophisticated real estate families in manhattan, and certainly not by the wasp aristocrats connected to the met museum and met opera and whatnot.
this burned up spanks, and has fueled much of his hatred/worship of them. He married his daughter to one of those families, to prove that he could, but in the end he realizes that he is far too crude and crass to be accepted by the Manhattan elites. This is nothing new - it's been going on for 40 years. So he went the route of pro wrestling, cheap ties and Trump Steaks.
On TV he managed to play one of the Manhattan aristocrats, but that was acting.
In the end, his Midwest fan club recognizes that he talks like the local bullshyter down at the drug store, lying and exaggerating for effect. It's all very familiar to them and entertaining.
That the elites loathe trump is a major bonus for them.
The only problem is that Youngstown & everybody else voted against him in the midterms.
It looks like the Michigan primary is in March.
Amash will be way out of the news cycle by then.
At that point, either a number of Republicans will have joined him in Trump impeachment talks or this will be long forgotten.
So will his primary challenger have much ammo then?
Amash still votes conservative down the line. Do Republicans really want to push him out?
Could it be a Flake thing where they lose a seat by pushing him out?

Virtually all of Ohio is a dumpster fire. Crappy economy, workers fleeing in droves, rust belt hell.
You don't know what you're talking about.
Ohio has the 7th largest state economy.
Ohio is the 4th largest state manufacturer.
Ohio's economy would rank 21st among COUNTRIES if Ohio were a country.
Ohio unemployment rate is currently 4.4% which, while higher than the national average is still considered "full employment".
The population in Ohio has steadily INCREASED for decades, and this is DESPITE the fact that a large population of retired people choose to move to a warmer climate.
Dumpster fire? What are you talking about? The economy is so good here that Ohio voters will very likely vote again (not a guarantee) for the most corrupt President (by far) in our nation's history.

And yet Ohio ranks 36th in the US in median household income and 30th per capita. Where is all that money they're generating going? because it sure as hell isn't staying in the state.

Really, now. That money is diverted to the bottom-feeding Red States.
The cost of living in Ohio is very low. Salaries do not need to be high here. The median home value here is $139,000. Your point still does not equate to Ohio's economy being a "dumpster fire" as the other poster put it. The economy here is terrific right now.

I didn't say the Ohio economy is necessarily bad, just pointing out that it's clear the money is either rapidly leaving the state or in highly concentrated areas like Columbus.
