I'm getting old and can only handle 40 mpw. If I could handle 40 mpw of all speed, tempo and intervals, I would.

Is it because of runners world magazine? Why don't they realize that running more miles will get them faster than the track.. or losing some lbs will get them faster than the track
I see the stupidest training stuff on fb updates one by a certified "coach"
They do it to get faster, sometime with success.

Interesting question though. If you could only run 30mpw what would you do for road racing?
I would do three 10 mile progression runs a week.
Think you could run decent 5k to half w that
That would interesting. If you were limited to 30 miles per week what would be the best training schedule for you?
Some respond better to strength, others to speed. Three ten mile progression runs would be a good plan for sure.
You could also do two ten mile progression runs, one 4 mile LT run, and maybe one interval workout with limited rest for a four day a week schedule.

I don't do tank tops, man. Tank tops are for cvcks!
Busting my ass 6 hours a day on my bike, ass bones grinding on the saddle. that's the life :)
They read in the latest Runners digest or what have you that they'll burn 10x! the number of calories if they run fast a little! And it doesn't hurt as long, what a miracle! So of course they do the speedwork!

Agree. I know a girl who is "training" for a 10k on like 20 mpw and one day is intervals..
Why should that bother you?
I've done speed work at 50 pounds overweight and less than 30mpw. The main reason is I was too out of shape to run over a mile. The other reasons were I enjoyed doing repeats, being on a track I was only a few hundred meters from my car, interval training helps you lose weight faster than running longer.
Did the OP participate in high school track & field? I don't recall a high school T&F coach demanding any athlete to run more than 30 miles per week. In high school one certainly does speed work. Regarding fifty pounds over weight: to lose weight it's good to do a variety of activities. If one is fifty pounds over weight, running numerous miles at a sub-10 minute per mile pace is difficult. As we know, one won't burn much fat just jogging at ten minutes per mile.

I remember Amby Burfoot (then editor of Runners World) wrote about "the Perfect 30 Mile Week." back in the early 80's I think. I was something like this:
Mon -- rest
Tues -- speed work (6 miles)
Wed -- 4 mile recovery
Thurs -- rest
Fri -- race pace repeats (6 miles)
Sat -- 4 mile recovery
Sun -- 10 mile long run
If you are a hobbyjogger/old fart like me, you could do worse. I also think that your typical hobbyjogger is fitting running into his/her schedule -- around work, family, community activities, etc. And the idea that they could simply double the time that they train each week is a pretty huge assumption.
Yeah it cuts into the going out to eat and watching tv time. Most Americans are just to preoccupied w BS
To the OP: if you aren't a double gold medal winner, why are you wasting time thinking you'll ever matter as a runner? That's what I thought.
Knowing you wrung the sponge.
Personal satisfaction knowing you did your very best is important in life. If you aren't going to try and do your best then why bother?
