Seeing a marathon where a human actually ran sub 2 would matter a lot.

how will it matter? suppose a human ran now sub 9 seconds in 100m in some illegitimate way. how will that be inspiring?
Kipchoge is great, but he only has so many marathons left in him. Does he really want to be remembered as taking part in what amounts to be a publicity stunt/commercial for Nike? It would be like Jesse Owen racing horses. It would cheapen his legacy. Only Nike would end up benefiting.
If nike ruins our chance at a bekele and kipchoge race in London I will never forgive them
I'm totally mad too, but It's not nike i'm dissapointed in. Nike is a company and this is just good bussines for them, and i would expect nothing more. But Kipchoge, surely he must understand how ridiculus(sorry for spelling) this is, and surely he must understand that the only logical step for him now is going for beating bekele and setting legitimate wr.
There's nothing about this endeavor that is good for top tier running. Whatever short-time public relations benefit is gained by promoting it will be more than offset by disappointment when no one breaks 2:00.
People need to stop thinking about 2:00 for at least 5 and perhaps 10 years. Apparently racing itself, and there have been very close races at the "marathon majors," isn't enough of a selling point. It needs to be one.

I sign the petition but I also say to Kipchoge, move back down to 10,000 and beat Mo Farah

At the best scenario , there will be a picture with 1:59:50 or something but not one will care or remember! because it will be fake.
This whole project is a disaster
I'll sure as hell remember.

He still wants the world record as he mentioned and expressed.
I think 1:59:59 would cover that.

Please explain how that would matter a lot?

It just doesn't make sense. NIKE are screwing the sport.
Kipchoge, please please please
Such a diversion could be the end of his career.
Hopefully Beleke doesn't participate in such nonsense.
This is arguably the best era in marathon running.
But unfortunately some people cannot simply enjoy it and just be patient - it's all about the numbers for them and now the obsession for 2hrs.
Most athletes in Kenya /Ethiopia are running to make a living. How would knowing that some day running 2hrs is within reach would help them?
A dark future will be that a selected number of people will be trained in some special ways from early age, and others will not follow since they won't have the means. Running is about simplicity - everyone can run and there is no need for much funding to show talent. Let's keep it this way and stop with the megalomania.
Suppose this project turns out to work and kipchoge runs below 2hrs.
If any thing this can discourage many people (who may have real potential) from running. Once something becomes far from achievable this is what will happen and we so we will see less African runners on the road....
Swimmers were smart to stop the swimsuit technology race. Those who had the money can afford it and it caused inequality in the sport already at a young age (which screws up discovering talent).
Let's keep it simple and stop the nonsense or we will see the sport degrading to something we don't connect to.
I join this effort
All the hate on the sub 2 project...
And I bet ALL of you will be watching the event live.

By this logic everyone should stop watching the Boston Marathon because it is not a legitimate course for record purposes?

"All"
There's only one person complaining about this under 30 handles
Both Eluid Kipchoge and Nike are complete professionals of the sport. If they choose to team up for the sub 2 hr. attempt they have my full support. I look forward to the outcome. And even if the time that is produced is not legal what will be gained from this endeavor can be used for future marathon running.

Depending on how it's run, I'm actually quite interested in seeing this. If it is essentially flat course with perfect weather, and the main bit that makes it record ineligible is how the pacing would be done, it would be a great way to see what a human can do in "perfect" conditions with perfectly even splits.
You know, the types of things that Ventolin keeps harping about as to why someone didn't run faster. Completely even pacing via mechanical pacer (for pace, not drafting).

Dear Eliud Kipchoge,
This sub 2 hour is not the real thing. You are one of the greatest (if not the greatest) marathoner of all times and this project means you will not be on the road for one of the top marathons.
We are all huge fans and hope very much that you will come back to the real thing - competing in regular marathons. Hopefully we will also get to see one of the greatest matchups in history this spring.
I imagine many here and all over the world think the same.
Thank you for considering!
Are you bozos going to fund him for the next contract cycle? Running isn't a charity for him to give you something to spectate. After he's long retired you will move on to the next big thing. You are terrible
