I thought I was the only long time runner that read that book and really disliked it. I found it be very hackneyed.
The Purple Runner.
Hard to find. Out of print, I believe.
There was time a while back when I ripped through everything running. What I remember from that time was thinking The Olympian was easily the best ficton. If it wasn't for the big workout in Once A Runner, there wouldn't be much there in my opinion. I also enjoyed Life At These Speeds.
Run For Your Life by Tim Smith
Maniac Magee
Anything by Galloway
Read Once a Runner years ago and enjoyed it. Just recently read Racing the Rain and Again to Carthage, in that order, and enjoyed those also.

Lovelock is a good one. Obviously based on a true story.

There was a collection of running short stories, poems, and novel excerpts that came out in the mid 90s. I don't remember the exact title but it had some pretty cool stories with real drama. There was an excellent short story about a private in WWII running through enemy lines at night to deliver an urgent message.
I know that is a vague post but maybe somebody else will know what I am talking about. Hardback had a stylish white cover.
The Olympian is a better story than Once A Runner in my opinion.
I just pulled my copy of the bookshelf. This book is titled The Runner's Literary Companion. It was edited by Garth Battista. The short story you mentioned is Going to Run All Night by Harry Sylvester. That's probably my favorite story from the collection.
The Gift
There is some great running fiction on these threads.
