So I'm very uninformed about the MIAC rule book. Is Manni going to be able to enter at a 49.7 or will he have to use the 51 that he has on raceberry? Heats in the 400 are extremely important, its very rare you will see even a very talented runner win a title out of anything other than the fast heat. Mann's potential seed time will likely influence not only the events he is entered into but also the events Kordah ends up in as well.

I love how the 400m and 600m events are drawing this much attention. Not enough love has been going their way the past few years on this board.

That said, what does everyone think about the DMR the first day? Who stacks it? Who is strong enough to do well in it?

If you're like me and come here for the laughs, check out the NCAA Division 3 Track thread too. They mention the MIAC occasionally, actually have funny fake stories as opposed to "Frederickson ate cookies", and routinely roast our undereducated allies to the east, the WIAC.

Bethel - I say they stack it, return everyone on it from last year.

St. Thomas - Probably won't score any points as individuals minus Burback so might as well stack their DMR.

Olaf - They are just deep

Gustavus - I guess? I don't know.

Why does everyone keep putting St. John's as their top pick?.. They don't have any milers that can do the 1200m or the mile. And I know that the 400m leg is basically pointless, but their 400m runners are pretty abysmal.

The reasoning behind putting St. John's first is Ryan Bugler. He's typically run the mile leg of the DMR, and if you watched the DMR at all last year you'll know why people are putting St. John's as their favorite. They don't need anyone stellar in any of the other legs of the DMR, as long as they have guys that can stay close enough to the front pack Bugler (4:15 miler) should be able to catch and kick down most people (see last year's race). Now if he doesn't do the DMR and just focuses on the 3k then I agree St. John's does not look good, but assuming he's sticking to his usual indoor conference line up he should run it. That being said my predictions would be:

1. St. John's

2. Bethel

3. Olaf

4. Gustavus

5. St. Thomas

I think Gustavus and St. Thomas could be a toss up, but if St. Thomas puts their top guys in open events (Knowlton, Burback, and/or Charlie Jones) I think Gustavus might be able to edge them out.

Fredrickson goes out hard and leads until the last 50, but Klamm overtakes him at the line with his blazing wet finishing speed. Klamm hasn’t run a 600 in over a month, but he’s relentless when it comes to chasing dudes down. Supinski slips in another third place finish, with Krause close behind.

This one will be lasered. Krogman comes off a monster victory last weekend and takes the surprise W. Bjork makes a strong surge in the middle to separate himself from the pack and take second. Matty Ice picks up the bronze. Eggers lays an egg like he has at conference before and Hatton isn’t himself without the mullet.

Donson has the wet speed to hold off Coffey in what will be a very close race. Eggers bounces back from a disappointing 800 to edge out Woah Bjork and the mulletless Hatton.

As cool as a cup of iced coffee, Joe has ice water in his veins. He pulls away at the 800, and holds off Donson for the W. Third is a crapshoot, but Henschel sneaks in with a lasered last lap.

This field is so bunched up, but Bugler has the talent and speed to emerge from the mess and win easily. Berhe shows up big just like he did in cross, and Ketola closes hard to take third. Too bad Jovan isn’t here to spice this one up a bit more.

Jovan wins by at least 10 seconds to snag his first MIAC title. Carpool and Jones have lasered finishes to pull away from the rest of the field.

Jerry crossing into ole territory and declining an opportunity to jog to a 3-peat in the 8. Shots fired.

400m:

This is so clear cut, it isn't even funny. Also, the number of underclassmen in the 400m this year means this event will be very deep in the next 2-3 seasons. I'm very excited.

600m:

Isaac Krause - Hamlin

i agree with the poster above. Fredrickson goes out hard as he has all season. This typically works to his advantage, but he's never gone up against a man who closes as aggressively as Klamm. That man can close. He gets passed with just about 20 meters to go and gets edged out. Krause doesn't go out as fast as these two and Supinski, but his strength helps him close well to pass Supinski on the curve going in to the home stretch.

800m:

Brandon Krogman - Saint Mary's

Sean Bjork - Olaf

Isaac Krause - Hamlin

I'm going Krogman on this! Stays hot and runs a smart race and gets the "W". Sean Bjork stays on the hot pace and outlasts (as he has done in every race all season) Isaac Krause who comes up with a big race of his own.

1000m:

Donson Cook-Gallardo - Carleton

Matthew Lillehaugen - Concordia

Joe Coffey - Olaf

That's right mother f***ers!! Matthew Lillehaugen sneaks in for 2nd!! He is perfect for this event. Strength, but not enough for the mile. Speed, but not enough for the 800m. THIS IS ALL HE HAS. LET HIM HAVE THIS. Splits DCG and Coffey.

Mile:

Charlie Jones - St. Thomas

Part of me believes that Coffey has had enough of this nonsense and goes from the gun and wins by 3 seconds..but we want more drama. DCG leads from the gun as he is very aware of positioning while racing indoors. Coffey sits on him harder than a large person in a recliner. He doesn't make the same mistakes as his has earlier and makes the smart move when he can to take the win barely. I put Charlie Jones here as he has a fast seed, and respectable speed/strength as of late with his 2:32 1k at Olaf. Really interchangeable here.

3k:

Ryan Bugler - Saint John's

Alex Berhe - Olaf

Keith Ketola - Olaf

This will either be the most boring race of the second day, or the most exciting. They are all so close to each other in terms of seed times, it'll be chaos. Question is, who will push the pace? Paul Timm isn't in it this year, Jovan isn't doing it either. So, will it be a painfully slow 5:00 first mile? Or will someone bite the bullet and stretch it out? Bugler ran his second mile of his 3k faster than most of these guys have run the open mile. He takes it however way he wants. Berhe goes 2nd if the pace is hot, Ketola is 3rd because of talent and kicking ability.

ADAM BRANDT - St. Thomas

I agree with the poster above. Jovan dominates this race. He is in the best shape by far and has the foot speed if it comes down to a sprint. Ketola is still talented enough to finish second here. And everyone's favorite new runner ADAM BRANDT (the new Jamie Norton - *See all D3 jokes on LetsRun) finishes hard for third here.

These are the only individuals who have pretty decent mile times and are only running the second day. So they probably are running the DMR. I wasn't sure about Henschel since he has only run the mile this season and I'm not sure if they will double him on the first day. Bugler is by far the strongest miler here. If they are close, Saint John's takes it. Olaf has enough tools here to finish second, but I say the St. Thomas anchor is strong enough to finish ahead.

I know you guys don't really ever talk sprints but I figured that with the attention the 400 has gotten this year, I might as well throw out my predictions across the sprints. I'm not going to do the 60 hurdles because literally no one cares and connor o'neill should win it and he's a tommie so screw him.

I predict no surprises here with respect to seed times, 1,2,3 as predicted. The excitement actually comes from the fact that Manni was entered 60/200 rather than 200/400. He is slated to run 60 at Nationals, so it will be fun to watch this little tune-up. And by little I mean little because its a 7 second race and nothing exciting usually occurs because its just too dang short. Also speaking of short, kind of interesting that Manni and Undre are about 11 feet tall combined and are MIAC-elite short sprinters. Undre doesn't do very well in really anything longer than the 60, but Manni has insane talent over all of the sprints.

200m

This was a tough one, had to look back on past years results to justify my prediction. Karl Olsen has run a disgusting 22.1 this year, which is crazy fast, especially for the MIAC. But, he ran it at Grinnell, a very nice 200m track against very good competition. If he runs a 22.1 at conference at UST he wins it, but running that fast around such a tight track is not likely. Egbujor's fastest is 22.4 this year, but he routinely ran 22.2/22.3 indoors last year. Honestly, between these two it is a toss up, however I would put my money on a bit more of a veteran in Egbujor. Lane assignment will be huge in this--Olsen should get 5 and Egbujor may be in 4 or 6, I'm not sure. I would look for a Manni win if he is placed in lane 4. Ekholm is very good outdoors but doesn't quite have the edge indoors, perhaps the tight turns are tough for him. Nevertheless, running at home should help. Drew Schoenbauer hasn't done anything really so far, but performed super well at indoor and outdoor MIACs last year, and is my sleeper pick to place fairly high. Could even snatch a top 3 on a good day. Finally, Barinedum, similar to Ekholm, is fast but doesn't handle the indoor curves as well as some of the shorter runners. I could see him rounding out the top five.

400m

This is as close to a locked top three as I can see. No one is going to touch Klamm for the 1 spot, and I don't think there is any way anyone will take the 2 spot away from Supinski. Pat Klamm is good but not great, the only way he could take down Supinski is with very, very good racing strategy--Supinski is notoriously slow out of the blocks and has a stellar top speed. If the Klamms can lead at the lane break and block Supinski's kick, theres a hope for a Klamm 1-2 combo. But seriously, this isn't gonna happen. It gets way less compelling after the top 3, Mueller likely slides in as 4th but honestly it drops off quick so its all up in the air at that point.

600m (kind of a sprint)

I'm not going to pretend to know much about this group so I'll be brief. Klamm is returning champion and has a kick makes opponents shudder (RIP Skrip 2016). From everything I hear about Fredrickson he's pretty GD good but also is from Gustavus so that remains to be seen. Supinski is big and strong and may surprise people--he should show off a pretty nasty kick of his own. Krause is a senior and has been there before, I would imagine he has a pretty good racing mentality but I really have no idea.

Nobody really stacks their 4x2s and looking at Bethel's entries in the open events they likely won't stack theirs either. But if they do, its theirs for the taking. Note: they have the fastest 4x2 time in the country across all divisions. Not a joke. The rest is kind of random, UST is always stupid deep, AUG has the pieces for a good team (Egbujor, Kordah, Smith-Brewer) but seems like they always have a fourth runner that runs like a 26 and destroys their entire relay. Then I picked Carleton because they have run a decent time and I don't want to research this race further.

4x4

Yeah Bethel is going to win this. By a lot. They may have a chance for a national title, folks. Similar to the 4x4, UST is just deep, they can usually field a decent team (Mueller, Queenan, Prater, Skidmore +2 others all qualified for conference--the only other team to qualify 4+ runners in the 400 is Bethel) so they will likely run away with second fairly easily. Carleton has run a decent time and DCG will hopefuly anchor so we may see a pretty sick kick to pull them into the top 3. GAC comes in fourth riding on the magnificent freckled white shoulders of the ReMine twins. Oles round it out in fifth if their runners can survive the weekend.

It truly is sad to see that the Auggies didn't really focus on the 400 this year. It would've been fun to see a repeat of last year's death match. That being said, those guys will still capitalize on the races they're in and I predict that Barinedum will find a way to jump into the top 3 in the 200.

This also could be Bethel's weekend to shine by sweeping 200, 400, 600, 4x2, and 4x4. Andrew Rock definitely has something brewing for the baptists of rden hills.

I also have a tough time picturing Krause finishing outside of the top 3 in the 600 after finishing second to Skrip in 2015 and third to Klamm and Skrip in 2016.

Bethel wins sprints, Olaf wins distance, Tommies win the field and the meet (wow what a Cinderella victory!)

I'm now hearing this meme that says Olaf, Johnnies, et al. are doing nothing, just gave up.

Guys. It's time for some game theory.

Just to clarify once and for all, there are Frederickson twins (Kyle and Alex) and Remine twins (Sam and Ed) at Gustavus and they're all Seniors?

I'm a junior, and until this track season I've only ever seen one Frederickson in action at a time, and figured that the name switching was due to one Frederickson going by his first and middle name interchangeably.

Yes the remines and fredricksons are twins. Alex fredrickson had mono two years ago and didn't race much and kyle fredrickson missed both idoor and outdoor last year due to a torn hamstring twice. They are in fact two separate people haha

he DCG and Fredrickson battle was a disappointment. Fredrickson got tripped up early on. Jerry still looked pretty good. Hopefully they run against each other again soon. Otherwise, there wasn't a lot to report from the Mankato meet.

Mile lived up to the hype, the 800m was freaking awesome, the DMR was full of drama, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT??
