Interesting analysis of Webb's mistakes and difficulties in that race. These all seem like great lessons learned. In fact, they seem a lot like the lessons learned from a college track and field career. Now he has to learn those lessons as a professional, where more is expected from him.
As for Warhurst bad-mouthing. For anyone who knows him, he tells it like it is, without malice or intent to defame anyone. He wanted Webb to stay and develop. Webb did not. Why are we so quick to side with an 18 year old kid who might not necessarily have known what was best for his future development?
Contrary to popular belief, Ron Warhurst was a successful college coach long before Alan Webb came along. He might just have a little insight into what works for the development of a young athlete.
So if he makes a few comments saying 'good luck to the kid, but I think he is making a mistake', which is what I have heard and read, why should this be such a big problem? He never said the guy sucks. He said he has unbelievable talent, and if he can train hard AND SMART, the sky's the limit.
Dare he say 3:48? I am sure Ron thought he had the ability to run that fast when he said it. That does not mean he will run it the following week. It means that Webb is a special athlete, and if all goes well, he could be great.
I see nothing wrong with Warhurst's comments. I do see something wrong with a coach whose track record speaks for itself being defamed by a lot of people on a message board that don't know what they are talking about. Many of the naysayers seem to think that collegiate track and field BEGAN in the 21st century.
Study your history before you mouth off.

"and to the people who pay to see him perform"
just for your info...It was no charge to watch the races at UF this weekend, so that rules out him having to talk to the reporters afterwords...and secondly...After reviewing my video of the race a few times...webb was stuck at the back from the get go...and after the first lap he surged on each straight away for the next 2 laps and would pass three people and look like he could move up...and then was shoved to the side on the turns and flung to the back again...I wouldn't count this race as a bad experience...i say its the best thing for him...he learned alot...and i say from the way the race went, him running in near 3rd lane on the turns and surging on the straights, he could have should have run 3+,4 seconds faster if he had only jumped off the line when the gun went off instead of crawl. but thats just my opinion...I can't wait to see him this summer! Its gonna be a real experience for him and great for the good old U.S. of A!
