Even though I wrote in my running book that I rarely run with headphones, and I like to focus on running and my surroundings, running with headphones does have its place. Treadmills really suck, and I have a hard time getting through a treadmill run without music (usually in a hotel in a foreign country where it is too dangerous to run outside). I need the beat and the stimulus on a treadmill. That might sound mentally weak, but I don't think so.
I think that running around a track is also extremely dull. Not a speed workout, but just anytime you find yourself somewhere with a good running track but no good roads or other places to run outside. Going around and around for anything more than a couple of miles sucks almost as bad as running on a treadmill.
I do agree with what another poster said: if you can't enjoy running while focusing on running--at least in a good outdoor location--maybe you need to find another sport/physical activity that you actually enjoy more.
