It's gone downhill since 2020. The violent crime that was virtually banished has now returned.

Wicker Park. Relatively safe if you can stand the hipsters. A couple miles from lakefront path down North Ave. You can enjoy my fav route, the NHAD loop (North-Halsted-Addison-Damen, 8 miles with spectacular views including Wrigley Field) from your front doorstep.
Lived in Chicago & suburbs. If you can swing it comfortably, stay in the city (as you said). Save Naperville, the suburbs are not worth living in.
I suggest you live in Englewood, Austin, or Garfield Park. You’ll be able to practice sprinting and you can treat the daily shootings like a starter’s pistol.
Naperville is nice, both for living and running. Any northern/northwestern suburb is also nice - Evanston is right on the lake, Wilmette/Winnetka are high income and very nice, and Naperville/Highland Park are more middle class and peaceful/calm, but have things to do. The shooting last summer was a massive anomaly.
Joking answer: move to Englewood, Garfield Park or Austin. Your speed will improve a lot
Lakeview East. You can be right by the Lakefront Trail but you're also able to run down by the zoo to mix it up. You're also within running distance of the Montrose track and the only "hill" within a 20 mile radius in Cricket Hill.
englewood will make you treat every run like a fartlek
Chicago is a warzone . But if you're mugged, don't demonize the youth as it's not productive.
