I hope everyone caught the joke here. "All of a sudden" is, in fact, standard English (while the first two expressions are not). The "butchered expression" that one hears with appalling frequency is "all of the sudden," which is NOT standard English.
More people would likely say the expression correctly if they read books. It's usually (Did I say "always"?) correct in those.
You're explanation doesn't past mustard with me.

I always thought "the proof is in the pudding" was a special case of "the dog ate my homework" applied to geometry class. Or maybe a combined home economics/geometry class.
I have made a concerted effort to avoid reacting to the butchered expressions, but the penultimate one which flustrates me is when "laxidaisical" is used.

Great topic for a thread, but I don't quite understand your reaction to your girlfriend. It seems all over, count to ten,I just enjoy them now, the sarcastic, today's gem".
It's no skin off my teeth if you don't like my expressions
I have a female friend who routinely says the phrase, "I seen that..." instead of, I SAW that.
I so want to correct her but I think since she's 55, she's set in her ways and it's a bad habit at this point.
I cringe every time she says it, and she's a professional. She came from rural Washington state and received a poor education.
Frustrating but I'm not going to broach the error.
