    I think coming into the year the thought would be those 4 and Yale. Definitely not harvard or brown. Anyone from my era always views Dartmouth as a darkhorse and they seem to be showing that.

    Perhaps the coolest Heps related story is that Cornell freshman Taylor Knibb won the world junior triathlon championships yesterday.

    Now that that's accomplished, don't be surprised if she joins the Big Red top 5 in xc as she's a big talent.

    The silver medalist - Lisa Tertsch - goes to Harvard.

    The other Cornell rookie - Kyleigh Spearing - finished 9th.

    And there was a Brown rookie in the men's competition - Oliver Blecher - who finished 6th overall.

    Looks like the race was close until the gun went off, then Cornell drew away. Did not attend and don't know whether they were just after a good pack run or what. Anyway, looks like a pretty good deep group.

    I'd caution against hopping on the Big Green train on the basis of Beantown. Hard to compare XC times year-to-year given weather changes and race strategy (but I'd argue that a fast 2015 and a slow 2014 represent a good range) but their results are pretty in line with Ivy performances at this meet over the past few years:

    2016

    Dartmouth: 24:29, 24:34, 24:41, 24:43, 24:44 = 2:03:11, 40 pts

    2015

    Dartmouth: 24:11, 24:17, 24:21, 24:24, 24:27 = 2:01:42, 67 pts (6th at Heps)
    Cornell: 24:04, 24:17, 24:28, 24:33, 24:37 = 2:01:59, 93 pts (4th at Heps)
    Harvard: 24:28, 24:35, 24:47, 24:50, 24:52 = 2:03:33 172 pts (7th at Heps)

    2014

    Dartmouth: 24:53, 24:59, 25:02 25:09, 25:11 = 2:05:14, 142 pts (4th at Heps)
    Harvard: 24:45, 24:59, 25:01, 25:31, 25:32 = 2:05:48, 179 pts (7th at Heps)
    Columbia: 24:54, 25:05, 25:18, 25:18, 25:23 = 2:05.58, 182 pts (6th at Heps)

    Depth was a lot less (see point totals) rather than the team being a lot better IMO.

    Men, women, or both?

    Technically, four of the women teams were among the pre-season top 30: Princeton, Penn, Harvard, and Yale, while Columbia and Brown received votes.

    New NCAA rankings came out today. On the men's side, Columbia is ranked 25, Penn is at 28, Dartmouth receiving 30 votes, and Princeton receiving 8 votes. A little surprised to see Columbia ranked 25th, didn't think they've done too much this early in the season yet. Dartmouth with a huge jump after a great weekend. Men's Ivies looking deep this year with 2 teams ranked and 2 getting votes so far. I know it's early but still nice to see.

    Seriously: 7 of the 8 women's teams receiving votes to some degree? Not too shabby! How many other conferences can show over 80% of the conference getting votes in the national coaches poll?

    I feel Princeton got dinged quite a bit since they did not run Curham and Bird for HYP, as Harvard only dropped one position with the coach saying they rested 3 of their top 5 for the race. I bet Princeton will jump back into the rankings in October once Curham and Bird are racing again.

    If Curham or Bird are going to run, I would expect for them to debut this weekend at the Wisco Invite. Major Kolas points if the team does well, especially if they best Yale in the process (who is on quite a roll this year).

    I hope Yale doesn't implode like they did in 2012.
