The trend for women is to be 10% slower than men in middle and long distance. With a 7:53 men's record, we can expect the women's record to lower towards 8:40. (Note that there is a 10,3% difference in the flat 3000 metres race.)

This event is still pretty new for women so continued improvement is definitely expected

This is a mistake I see often on here. You can't really compare women and men's times linearly like this because the difference isn't linear but more like exponential. One reason for this is because of things like many of the top women having straighter bodies than the rest of the women, giving them a greater advantage. The men have no such advantage.

also note that kiyeng is not/was not in best shape in rio & still probably here but managed a 9'01 !!!

kiiyeng can definitely get well below 9'00 probably 8'55 at worst when healthy, but the WR looks too far gone now

Funny that both the men's and women's WR for the SC are held by native born Kenyans running for other countries.

Also 7% slower than 3000 7:20 = 7:51 W 3000- 8:06 = 8:40 steeple

Women's performance catching up. Slaney's 3K AR is equal to 9 flat. +7% Coburn is getting there but overall the AR is a bit soft in comparison.

Men's 3K AR 7:29 +7% = 8 flat steeple

She is not that much of an exception. If you look all steeple chasers as well as hurdlers, they tend to be relatively slower over flatter races than over barriers. Most elite men 400m hurdlers running 48 or even 47 seconds can only run 45 seconds high on the flat 400m with only very few running low 45. Ezekiel Kemboi is 7:55 steepler but has only run 7:44 over the flat distance while world record holder Shaheen with 7:53 has run 7:32. It is therefore an unfair comparison. At the same time I am not denying that her progress is quite astounding.

You are comparing the steeple to one of the most doped performances of all-time, equivalent to a 4:03 mile, 3:46 1500. Even the doped Russians could only get 8:58.

IAAF scoring tables ranks Jebet's WR steeple at 1264 points. For comparison, they rank Ayana's 10k at 1288 points, Genzebe Dibaba's 1500 at 1287 and Tirunesh Dibaba's 5k at 1260 points.
