US should be required to run the same team they ran this morning in the rerun heat, right? That would only be fair (or at least as fair as this mess can be).

Germany women dropped the baton, should have said.

Two heat final!!!
Speaking of the race, how bad was the commentating on NBC? I timed it. It took more than 3 seconds from the time the baton fell for them to realize it.
Hammond is getting up there in age.
Waterfall start! Make everyone tackle each other on the exchanges!
But seriously, it's not fair to China that Brazil impeded US, because they initially thought they were going to get in, they should be in the final, but there's only 8 lanes
I think they should have the US run alone in the final and place them based on their time

Dropped baton. The US is out. Felix ran on the 2nd leg and on her hand off to English Gardner the baton was dropped.
There is no way Felix is one of the top 100m runners in the US right now. She has a lot of experience but this seems like an attempt to get her another medal.
Yelp!
The main problem is a decelerating 11 flat sprinter trying to catch a 10.8 sprinter who starts like a bullet. Btw, the Brazil athlete's left arm did make contact with Felix's right arm as she was about to hand off. However, Felix panicked as soon as she felt the contact, but it appeared Gardner was perhaps out too fast anyway.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that Felix shouldn't even be on the team and that she was included just for her legacy. It's not the first time that's happened. Jesse Owens was included in 1936 even though the U.S. brought two other sprinters and could have still won easily. The coaches wanted Jesse to get four medals.
Also in 1936, Germany dropped the baton in the final, securing the underdog U.S. team the gold.
Jesse Owens was the best in the world at 100m. It makes logical sense that he would be included on the USA's 4x100m relay. The same can not be said for Felix. She is not a top four 100m runner for the USA at this particular time in her great career.
What's the term for white privilege when none of those involved are white? Or is it still white privilege because a majority of the Americans who want the re-run so they can watch "their" team win are white?

The Chinese team will be robbed of their place in the final. What an embarrassing medal this could be for the US.
It's pretty clear the Brazilian obstructed Felix.

US in lane 2 is well ahead of Brazil (lane 3). The Brazilian third leg runner just starts her acceleration when Felix comes by, well clear of the Brazilian second leg. She is on the lane between lane 2 and 3 with her left elbow swinging back directly across Felix as she brings her right (outside) arm up. Felix has her hand in her right hand to make a right-to-left handoff with Gardner. The Brazilian runner impedes Felix, who loses balance and lets go of the baton in the next couple steps.
Ridiculous to discriminate against White Girl Prandini. Heck she and English have been on many relays together as Ducks.
I hope they drop the baton in their re-race with just themselves on the track. rofl. bunch of stinking dopers anyways.

gotta admit wrote:Bumping Canada and/or China would create another uproar if the US team is able to beat their time. We have a couple of options here:
1. Find another track with 9 lanes and run the event there
2. Build another lane onto the Oly stadium track
3. Have 4 teams start on one end of the track, and 5 on the other end. 2 finishing lines.
4. Have Canada and China run in the same lane since they have identical times.
I like option 3. Seriously, I don't see why this couldn't work.
I like option 4. With a little practice I think they will blow the doors off the existing 4x100m three-legged race!

Ato Bolden just said there are nine lanes on the track so he likes US's chances of getting into the final. I don't know what track he's been at, because there are clearly only 8 lanes that go he full distance around the track. There are 9 down the home stretch only. Jeez.
Guys a 100m sprinter. He thinks the track is 1 straightaway.
Seriously the brazalian gal entered the lane but Felix shouldn't have been close to the outside of her lane. Run in the middle of you lane and it is a non issue.

I'll take the second turn
can I have lane 3?
The new Re-do rule I love it. Make up rules as they go. Cool.

Are you saying it's ok to run outside of your lane? I wonder what a certain Frenchman would say about that?

She's on the outside of her lane so that the baton handoff (her left hand) can be in the middle. Gardner probably wants to start in the middle or outside anyway since she's going around the turn and the best angle of approach is the outside of the lane.
I also don't doubt that there was already trouble brewing before the contact and the Brazilian bump brought the whole thing to a panic level.
rojo wrote:
Does this track have 9 lanes?
Despite what others say, I think there are 9 lanes all the way around. I think some full lap heats with 8 had the inside person in the 2nd lane. I wondered if they did 9 lanes for exactly this type of situation. Though yes, I know a re-run is planned for a time qualifier, not a use of 9 lanes. And if bumping caused this, 9 lanes is perhaps the way to make bumping yet more likely.

would a false start or baton drop be more embarrassing?
False start

You have never run a sprint relay, have you?
Oh wait!---Brazilian police were hiding at exchange zone, pulled guns and made US runners drop baton.

Great post. Rumor is it that Obama is balking at another ransom payment. Now that the precedent was set with Iran it's going to be expected. It's sort of like tipping.
