It was excellent. I kind of stopped watching religious docs years ago because they always left me feeling a bit jaded on humanity. Although quite alarming, I found this one to be very thought-provoking as well. They interviewed several former member who comprised the highest 5-10 positions in the entire church. What stood out to me:
-I had no idea how smart L.R. Hubbard was. Has published over 1,000 books and got his start writing science fiction novels. The complex system he devised to invent an entire religion that people actually ADOPTED was nothing short of brilliant.
-In their quest to become tax-exempt, the church filed 2,400+ individual lawsuits against IRS employees in an effort to overwhelm them, and it actually worked. This thorough beatdown of a major government agency blew me away.
-Their employees make on average $0.40/hr, which is how they have amassed $3B+ in wealth through constant donations and savvy investments.
-What amazed me was how every member, from the bottom ranks all the way up to the Hollywood celebrities, was able to dissasociate from the violence, completely insane concepts, kidnapping, prison camps, etc. It took years and years to brainwash their members to just accept this as the norm.
This got me to thinking...
1) At what point does your cult get enough validation to actually be considered a viable religion? What requirements does it have to meet, and what threshold does it have to cross?
2) From what I can tell, people generally accept the Scientology concepts as being completely wacko. *However*, why is it we look down upon their belief system as inferior to the other worldly religions? Are their concepts really that much more fantastical than those of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, etc?
I think a major component is the information age in which we live. If any of the major aforementioned religions I just listed were started in today's age, that would be considered completely insane. BUT, they were started thousands of years ago, when we didn't have the convenience of mass communication of knowledge which could have quickly dispelled their very foundations and various gods.
While membership in Scientology appears to be down to roughly 50k, they still appear to be a very powerful organization. It makes me wonder how much longer they will last. 50 years? 100? In this day and age, do you think another group could gain so much power, and pull off the widespread brainwash that they did? It's hard for me to see that happening.
Thoughts?
