Really? I have, over the years, watched many a runner race themselves into top shape. Rudisha just did a fast 800 in, hmmm, ah yes, Europe! After having some slower ones and low finishes. Jock's best years seem to have been when he raced a lot, in college. Those of you who decide how good a runner will be amuse me. We would not have picked him for the team, but he earned his spot. And many a great runner comes through like that.

Jock held the race together for about 700m. In Rio, weeks away, if he holds it together the final 100 he could be quite successful. We will see, but I will be hoping he has a great set of races there.

Dude the point is clearly going entirely over head? Can you not read?

The issue is not racing oneself into top shape - the issue is travelling across 9 time zones to do it with the issues that are associated with doing so (jet lag and the time it takes to overcome that).

What I think is that this trip was planned well in advance of the trials under the assumption that he wouldn't make the team - and let's face it his place on the team is arguably the most surprising from the entire trials in distance races at least, and instead of just writing off the $1500 or so to fly to Europe, his team decided to go anyway and do exactly in theory what you are saying. Except the theory and reality of the situations are completely different.

I hope Jock runs well too but he is already BY FAR the weakest of the American MD chances and I just don't think this helps him at all. I'm sticking 100% by bonehead move!
