That means a punch in the back is an acceptable racing technique as long as you don't make it obvious.
Correct; this has always been the case.
from flotrack:
"Manzano went into lane two to pass Blankenship with 60 meters or so to go, but Blankenship hedged to the outside of lane two, bumped his hip against Manzano, and closed Manzano out at the line."
He should be DQ'd for making contact with Manzano; don't care if it's just tactics. that's crap. Manzano is a class act and bumping him and edging him over is unsportsmanlike, cheap, and in my opinion, it is cheating.
Blankenship should be DQ'd and Manzano should be 3rd.

This is a bunch of crap. Blankenship made the team and did nothing wrong.
You probably never even broke 4 minutes. At that speed things like this happen. It's no big deal.
Nope, I haven't. But have run 4:15 .... as a triathlete.
If there's a correlation between use of grammar and breaking 4, you definitely have not broken 4.
Know the rules: if you block an athlete by running into their lane and/or make contact with an athlete preventing them from running forward, you will be DQ'd
For an alleged real runner you don't know jack squat. That was nothing, period. Go back to your hobby jogging as Ben barely even drifted. Another fake star runner who knows it all.

I think Manzano would have a better case for a dq if he had gone wider in an attempt to pass Blankenship. If he was out in lane 5 and Blankenship was still drifting into him, he could have had him died. But as it was, it is too easy for Blankenship to claim that he ran a straight tangent off the curve at the finish line of lane 3, or some other excuse.
This sort of drifting happens very frequently in races as competitors try to make themselves slightly harder to pass. I think it is cheap, but not deserving of a dq as it happened.
Laura Roesler did it more egregiously at indoor nationals and wasn't dqed either, it was protested then too.
Btw, is that 200 minutes per week? It couldn't be miles and if it is, the slow miles are going to your head.

I agree. I ran a lot of mile races in high school and a lot of 1500s in college. I never ran faster than 3:56, but if the field is packed up there will be bumping and clipping. That is the nature of the race. Don't expect normal contact to be turned into DQs. I am refraining from calling the people pansies or ignorant who haven't experienced or don't understand this.

Not closed fist punches. That has never been the case.

"Hey, wait a minute!" ;-)
It was an amazing trials and many of us wished more of our favorite runners had made the team.
I love The Lion like we all do, Leo is a fantastic gentleman and athlete.
He probably wouldn't want people being aholians about it though...
Enjoy the sport.
