live like me
My company made a Billion last year and the board members gave themselves an obscene bonus. The workers got nothing other than a Demand to save them 20 per cent in costs. So this year I promise to spend 20 per cent less time on letsrun.com.
Maybe the Bros will let you be a mod
We have this policy at work that you can use the internet for personal reasons, but it's real...suibjective? as to who and how they feel about it.
They don't mind some people doing it and others they use it as a reason to accuse you of loafing.
Some companies promote personal use to keep you at your desk..others forbid personal use. If they don't like you for any reason, they will use it as a reason.
We have a phone call policy that says we can make short personal calls. I got into bad trouble because as a cross country coach, i would occasionally call the guys after a meet to check on injuries, congratulate...etc..or I would return calls fropm other coaches, meet directors,AD's..but I kept all of them under two minutes.
I was so nervous when i got called in front of "the man"..I was shaking. He told me about the calls and in the future to get a phone card..with hat in hand, i profusely apologized (I'm no brain surgeon, I'm 50 and I won't get any real good jobs again) So, I find out that the months bill of my phone calls were 2 dollars and 57 cents.
Yet, I see people taking at least 25 or 30 fifteen minute cig breaks a day.
It just depends on who you are. Fat non-athletic employers hate athletes and coaches.
People take 25 to 30 15:00 cigarette breaks during a day? That's 6 or 7 hours of smoking. Surprised your boss hasn't caught on..

"caned" your behind?
I thought that only happened in Singapore? Man, what a bummer. I've been "canned" but never "caned".
Your boss caned you? Oooh, kinky.
get a cell phone and quit your bitching
Your boss should not have been sneaking around looking at your private stuff. Talk to a lawyer about a case. Were you told not to use the computer for a few personal visits to websites?
You were fired because the boss didn't like you. Your internet surfing habits was merely the means to that end.
If you are working for salary, you can do anything you want. The company doesn't mind invading your personal time when they need to, so they shouldn't mind if you bring your personal life to work either.
If you're being paid by the hour, this is a different story. In this case, you deserve what you got. But if you have ever had to work on a weekend or take work home, then you should sue them.
Out.
What was it concerning personal internet usage? Personal phone calls?
Have you ever noticed how long the big fat lady's sit around talking about their grand kids in the office?
Like Kilgore said..depending on company policy..it may be just an excuse.
Just have to say that I view that personally as invasion of privacy by installing software to monitor your activity.
My advice is sue the basterd for wrongfull termination and invasion of privacy. Due give hope over one idiot.
Good luck
you have to be kidding me.
I've seen this trick pulled countless numbers of times. I've also worked in management and was told that this what you should do when you want to fire someone.
In any company, you have countless numbers of policies and rules that are vague and are often rarely enforced. The reason they exist is to give you ammunition which enables you to document "infractions" which you can put on paperwork as you process someone out of a place. Nowadays, personal use of the internet is the number one documentable activity.
More than likely, our original poster was some slacker at work and probably got what he deserved. There have been a few rare incidents where it was simply a personality conflict between one person and the other and the termination was simply a Machiavellian way of getting even.
The best way to get revenge is go collect unemployment then hire a nasty lawyer who works on contingency to sue for wrongful termination. He will subpoena all the documents for the workplace, and you'll see how prevalent personal use of the internet is esp. the boss's personal use. You might get lucky and see where he was surfing porn sites. At the very least, you will aggravate and embarrass them.
I highly recommend following this course of action. I have gotten revenge before, and don't believe the hype. Getting even is one of the sweetest pleasures there is. You won't know the pleasure until you try it for yourself.
The reason people don't pursue revenge is because they think they won't be successful which hurts like a mother. They'd rather forget than risk the pain of knowing how impotent they really are. But revenge is always in your power even if it is merely living well.
Out.
Are you retarded? An employeer pays an employee to do a job. If an employee is not working during work hours it is like stealing. Taking money and doing nothing in return is not moral in any sense of the word.
And invasion of privacy - come on. Whose property is he on? Whose computer is he using? If anyone should do any sueing its the employer.
The time is now to begin plotting revenge.
I don’t agree. The employer-employee relationship is one of master and servant (whether we are comfortable with this or not). If the employer sets up the work system such that there is little or no room for employee slack then the personal use of the internet (or reading the newspaper or excessive socializing) is definitely punishable. I don’t think it is akin to stealing, but it is definitely cause for progressive discipline to be instituted.
However, a lot of employers – especially government, and big public and private corporations – don’t really effectively manager every person in the organization. There is a lot of slack all over the place and all the major deliverables still get delivered.
Also people even higher up the food chain may look at the case and say “you mean John slacked off on letsrun for 3 hours out of every working day for 3 months, and he still got his job done well and on time?” Something is wrong John’s manager not adequately managing the work flow. Let’s fire or otherwise discipline him for not utilizing his or her resources properly.

You have NO right to privacy in that situation. It's the companies computer, and you're on their time.
