A primer (that's like a FAQ) for the low information visitor to TrackTown:
Taxi cabs are just like Uber or Lyft, only with prices that are more stable and with better insurance coverage and driver requirements. You just phone them and then they come and get you. What a concept.
You might even be able to contact some of them on the Web or via an app, without all the trauma that you youngsters seem to experience with actual voice contact (telephone calls).
Or simply wear tie-dye and late 1960s hippie clothes and put out a thumb.
I live in Portland and going out on the weekend was a nightmare before Uber and Lyft. Way too few taxis in the city, on a Friday or Saturday night if you tried to call they would rarely be able to give you an ETA of when someone might be able to get you. Several times I waited 1-2 hours when the bars closed to get a taxi home, and dispatch would have no idea when our ride would arrive. Now I never wait more than 10 minutes with Uber and Lyft, and yes it's cheaper outside of surge hours. They've made it a much safer and convenient city to live in.
Hopefully the taxis can keep up with the massive influx of people in Eugene at the trials..
