I have worked closely with them in the past. I got the college section of their database off the ground using (with permission) data that VaultnGus originally put together, and did a looooooot of data entry before TFRRS came around.
I think I got paid a very small amount at that time, maybe 7 years ago? Unfortunately, they didn't have the resources to pay me for doing collegiate stuff on a regular basis, and once I started having kids, I ran out of time and energy for volunteer data entry.
I am quite sorry that athletic.net stiffed you out of money. That's what all the online track entities do. They take advantage of your fanhood and never come up with wages that meet a minimum. You're expected to be charitable with your time and accuracy and they can't pay you money. You could honestly have worked at a fast food restaurant and earned more which is absolutely pathetic.

Maybe Max is using his marketing genius to keep everything quiet.
