Actually he has been AWAY from the top of the game for a loooong time.

Sounds like Jan Ullrich: he was always overweight just 2-3 weeks before the Tour de France, then miraculously lost 20 lbs in 10 days - only fat, not muscles. Of course he got some pharmaceutical help for that. Yes, certain weight loss medications do work.

This Pitsiladis guy...there's so many indications that he doesn't know what the hell is going on, or what it would actually take to run a sub 2 marathon. Psychologists would better identify the kind of person that it takes to do that. It's more than just a freak; it's a freak who's also a masochist of the highest degree- but also a highly inteligent masochist. There are probably kids sitting in suburbia somewhere who could run a world record marathon, but will never have the mental strength to get there. It's got nothing to do with being 25 pounds overweight or, in my view, living the majority of one's life at altitude in east Africa. Farah has lived the majority of his life at sea level, and is still a world champion at 10k...all discussion of tue's asside.

When will Ethiopian federation select their 10k/marathon squad? Seems like this will be BK's last chance for Olympic glory....

It seems that Bekele is not trained by Renato any more and back to his previous long-term coach. It didn't produce impressive results in Chicago 2014, so I do not expect much better now... Sill waiting for the Ethiopian selection though.

Bekele has been struggling with Achilles issues for years that have nearly forced his retirement. No peds are going to fix that.

This is one of the most talented athletes to ever walk the Earth. The reason he can't run track anymore is his Achilles tendons.

Well repairing a ruptured Achilles tendon is a corrective medical procedure. Like having an operation. Not doping. If he needed medicines to repair his tendon then he could get a TUE for them. Epo isn't gonna help.

Do athletes have to have operations whilst awake because anaesthetics are banned?

"Good Lord!" "What on Earth?" Why all the over-the-top astonishment? You've heard of Kenenisa Bekele, right? If not, do a quick search. He's run some WR's, won a few world x-c titles (and by "few" I mean: a LOT), and run some of the most amazing performances of all time (see: Paris 2003, 10,000m WC, particularly 2nd 5k).

Really, should anyone be surprised even a little at anything the guy might do? No, you shouldn't.

But if you must know the "secret" to what he did London, here it is:

Core baby!! And weights could only mean one thing: CROSS-FIT baby!

So there you have it: Core and Crossfit, and you can create a sub-2 hour marathon. I bet Rich Froning will be doing one (or several) in no time. (and if you don't know who that it, God help us all.) This scientist should not be scouring East Africa for his potential 2 hour marathoner, but he should be scouring cross-fit gyms across America: ripped, shredded, and SUB 2 HOUR!

How these athletes would trust him with their careers and take anything orally he gives them is beyond me. In general they aren't the brightest, spend most of their adult life time training, and probably desperate when they see him.
