I'll add a vote for focussing on distance in training. With your 5k PB, speed is not an issue. I've never broken 17min for 5k but am a 2:48 marathon runner on 90mi/150km per week.
Enjoy your first marathon which you'll hopefully run in the low 2:50s, but I expect if you persevere over the next couple of years you'll be in the 2:30s.
In terms of nutrition - definitely practice in training. I now just take water and only a few jelly beans during the marathon as the small advantage of gels and isotonic drinks was far outweighed by stopping for the toilet or vomiting.
