Malmo has made this voy the most hyped runner in a while. Better perform or Malmo and Metric Miler are going to look dumb. Well too late for that in the case of Metric Miler after telling Renato he knows more about Kenyan doping.

Are world records relevant to high school kids? A high school kid followed another high school kid for less than half of a race, then accelerated and did what less than 10 high schoolers have done (and only what, 3 in a high school-only race?) in history. It's not less impressive at all.
If the rabbit doesn't stay in the lead for 1/2-3/4 of the race, did it really matter? What if his buddy lead for 500m? Is that "rabbited"? What about 385m?
I'd agree that running the time in a pro race is less impressive, unless the HS kid happens to win the race of course.

Haha. Everyone knows more about Kenyan doping than Renato. He covers his eyes, puts his fingers in his ears. See no evil, hear no evil.
We will see what Slagowski runs this year. If he tackles another 800m, unless something goes very wrong he will run a lot faster than 1:48.7. If he has decent competition then he could run something special.
I think a good HS comparison for Slagowski is Nate Brannen. Nate is a speed based miler and ended high school with PR's of 1:46.6 and 3:59.85. I can't find a 400 time but he was likely around 48.x open as he had some 47.x 400m splits as a college freshman.
His best event right now will be the 800. I think we'll see a 1:46 low if he gets in the right race with his speed and endurance.
Brannen ran that when he was much older at age 19 ,only a couple of months if I recall before he turned 20. Canadians go to school an extra year. Brannen didn't get much faster in the 8 either. Slag is way better than him.

My point is the line of fitness is likely similar. I see a 1:46 low, and maybe a 3:56-7 mile for him this season if he gets in the right races. Slagowski doing it younger hopefully shows he has more potential. He'll ultimately be a miler but his best times this year will be at the 800 until he develops his endurance a bit more.
Nah ,I'm thinking more like 3:55 or faster in the right race. Slag hasn't been tested yet in the 8 or mile. He soundly beat Lomong and McGorty indoors in the 8. Could be wrong though. Might not run well against pressure. Wouldn't bet against Drew. Slag should be close to him on paper. After watching the videos Drew has a little more of a kick. Slag is more a front runner hold on type.

You're basing this on a solo 800 and a mile where he was solo for the second half?
Conversely, Hunter has lost in tons of close races (both of his sub4s, his 1:48, etc.)
How on earth could you have come to this conclusion?
No I am basing this on his 800 indoors that he won. Had it been tactical he'd of lost. Both of Hunter's mile losses were to older runners not high schoolers.
When a 1:48 guy runs negative splits for a 1:50 to win decisively in the final 50m, that is as tactical as an 800 gets. He is a kicker...even in the 800.

He didn't negative split. He ran 55 and 55 passing a guy slowing down.
What part of 55.8/54.5 do you not comprehend as a negative split? http://www.nbnationalsin.com/eprofile.php?event_id=1164&do=videos&video_id=168977Congratulations, you just lost the interwebs, and didn't even make it difficult.

I am really shocked by the comments on this thread. The metric miler person who thinks MS has great endurance is completely wrong. Anyone who followed him in cross country knows this by now. He was 45th at the NXR Northwest meet. Meanwhile Drew Hunter was winning Footlocker. The Rocky Mountain coach knows this and is why we have seen him do more 400s this year and no 3200s. Comparisons to Webb are unjustified. Webb was much stronger and ran in the 8:40s and lost at the end one of the greatest Footlocker XC races of all time. Can't imagine he will run much faster in the mile or the 800 this season.
When a speed-side guy can run a 3:59 with the fastest lap being #3, by himself, that is plenty of strength for a four-lap race. He is no Brandon McGorty. But you are right about one thing: you can't imagine.

If you think he is going to be close to Webb's record you do have good imagination.

I'm REALLY shocked that you think a sub 4 mile doesn't show great specific middle distance endurance.
I think his racing style is same as German Fernandez in HS. That bodes well for him in college (if he can stay injury free).

He was 10th at NXN NW as a junior - certainly not at Andrew Hunter level, but suggesting he was only good enough to be barely top 50 in his regional meet is a bit disingenuous.

Also, looks like he is sticking with the 800/1600/3200/4x4 quad at state again this year. No open 400m (he ran that once this season and once last season). Also, only ran the 3200m one less time this year than last, so not a big difference there either.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
