London Marathon Thiefs

People on a reddit thread are saying people were told they could take the water. It was at the 8-mile mark three hours into the race.

This is probably the case.

It is not very likely that people would steal something that they can go home and get for free.

BTW, what marathons use water bottles? I thought they all used nasty fire hydrant water scooped out of possibly unsanitary garbage pails into small cups?

No, this is not true. They are making excuses for thievery - it was a clear case of mass theft, with people running and bringing trolleys and prams to fill with crates of water.

The water guys were told not to get in to any altercations with them. They weren't 'let' to have it, they were thieving, and simply weren't stopped.

lots of marathons use water bottles in europe. but you didn't know that because you live your basement lalaland.
