Hey idiot,
Tell that to Leer, Blankenship, McNamara and Hartmann.
Otherwise sit down, shut up and leave the factual conversation to the adults.

By definition, "good runners" can attain those times. Not very bright, are you?

If you've hit ANY of the times listed in your life, congratulations, you've made it to Runner Status.

3200m--10:00.00

10000m--35:00.00
Half marathon--1:20:00.00
Marathon--2:45:00.00
Proper comment on said list:
No freakin' way.
I broke 4 of those 7 (and EASILY for those 4), just missed two others and missed one by a decent amount.
But, I was always a hobby jogger...and I even made a little bit of money with running...paid my rent with it one month.
Unless you make a living from running (or benefited in a big way from your running as in a D1 or D2 scholarship athlete), you are a hobby jogger. Being a hobbyist doesn't have anything to do with any level of ability shown in any arena (running, photography, race car driving, clog dancing). It ONLY has to do with whether you make a living from said activity.
Flagpole, see my post above on this page (7) and apologize to me for being so Egriously WRONG. (Again.)
Some of you don't have a clue.

Anyone that can't understand that a 4:00 mile won't get you into the Olympics, for example. Or that a 4:15 is no where close to 4:00. Or that a 15:00 5k is so far away from Mo Farah it's not worth talking about. Or talks about the 1600m or 3200m (repulsive distances). Or doesn't realise someone puts in a decent amount of work to achieve performances such as sub 2:00 800m, 4:25 mile, 16:30 5km, a 1:15 half or 2:40 full etc.
There is no way you wrote that with a straight face. You can't possibly be that stupid, right?

Did you seriously just equate a 1:40 half marathon with a sub 3:00 marathon?!! Pace prediction calculator. Learn how to use it. For example: I run about the equivalent of a 1:32 half marathon every weekend (race in the low to mid 1:20s) in my long run and have not broken 3:00 in the marathon!
That was a mistake. I already fixed it.

Amanda Gehrich the #1 American prep female miler last outdoor season. 4:39 if I remember correctly.
Women's standards are different. Read the thread before you talk with the adults.

No, we can't. Go back to Sloggersworld.
People are getting pretty worked up, so my question is: does it really matter all that much if someone says they are a hobby jogger vs a runner?
Nope. I am CORRECT! Apology not tendered.

So Will Leer, Jason Hartmann, JMac and others are Hobby Joggers?
Please film yourself approaching any of them and telling them they are joggers.
I'm still waiting for your apology.

Leer is a professional runner! Hartmann was one. What are you talking about?
You are a good troll though.
I think the 2:00 / 4:30 / 10:00 / 16:00 / 35:00 / 1:20 are probably roughly equivalent performances for a high school boy who doesn't have a lot of years of mileage under his belt yet. This would probably be about the #4 - #7 boy on a decent but not national-class varsity team at a large high school. For an adult with several years of distance-oriented training and who hasn't raced an 800 in an organized track meet in well over a decade, 35:00 and 1:20 are much much easier than 2:00 / 4:30 / 10:00 / 16:00.

10:00 for a 2mile is way too easy.
1:20 half marathon lol any decent runner could do that as a long slow distance run. 2:45 marathon sounds pathetically easy as well.
Revise to:
9:40
1:15
2:35
I'm open to modifying the list. However, remember this is the Minimum Qualifications Distance Times.
For example, I ran 1:58 for the 800, but only Low 10 minutes in the 3200, hence I have not qualified in the 3200. I am more of a mid distance runner however.
The first 3 Distance times I'm not going to change. 2:00, 4:30, and 10:00 are pretty much the universal "barriers" to break for respectable runners.
I WILL change the 5k-marathon times if someone can present a solid argument, though.

They don't make a living off running. No sponsors, almost no prize money. Ever heard of Brian Sell?
Ok, so a few questions on this:
1) Is PED use permitted? Given that there are proportionately more PED users amongst elites than hobby joggers I would presume this is ok.
2) If a man was struggling to hit any of the males times but had a sex change would they no longer be considered a hobby jogger providing he/she could then hit the female times?
3) If a man started at running at 70 and did a 2.50 marathon would he still be considered a hobby jogger? That would be a WR for his age group. I don't see how a hobby jogger could be a world record holder.
Otherwise I think you've resolved the whole runner/hobby jogger debate. Good work.

1. No. There should be a lifetime ban for all dopers from competition.
2. There is no such thing as a sex change.
3. Yes, he is still a Hobby Jogger. He had his entire life to hit any of the time standards.
OP you only hit one of the standards and that was in high school. Basically you are a hobby jogger.

Everyone knows that the word "jogger" is a perforative as used here. Why is it not "hobby runner"?

The rules are if you surpass EVEN 1 of the universal time standards, you're a Runner.
I hit the 800 time (multiple sub 2 minute clockings). So far it's only 1 standard, but that's enough to qualify me as a Runner.
Refer to post 1 of this thread for the rules or if you have any additional questions.

Because slogging an 8-minute mile isn't running.
