Return of the Dove: "...there was a man not born of this planet who landed as a baby in the mountains of Croatia in 1856. Raised by 'earth parents', an avatar had arrived for the sole purpose of inaugurating the New Age." Nikola Tesla's work with electricty, wireless transmission, etc, has become the backbone of the society we find ourselves in. Like all great men who transcend their time, such as Beethoven, Moses, Leonardo, Jesus, Buddha, etc., Tesla has offered us insight that can be applied directly to running.
Due possibly to his pineal gland being triggered somehow, the lucky bastard periodically had hallucinations/visions while in a totally sober state. This is mentioned only to make it aware he was definitely accessing higher knowledge, the type that holds true under all circumstances, including running. At a time when Edison put the world in awe with direct current, Tesla discovered that alternating current, due to it being energy's natural state, was a vastly superior form of energy transmission.
Quite possibly the Kalenjin's (Working definition of Kalenjin: anybody who has gone 10K 27:00 male, 30:01 female) are operating nearer to AC than the rest of us who are closer to DC. Basically, the Kalenjin's are accessing incredible amounts of energy each time they become grounded, and in between these footstrikes are as relaxed as can be without going limp. More or less they are bounding instead of running, turning on for just that split second they come into contact with the earth and a split second later have reversed direction and turned off again. To me, running always seemed to be a sustained and continous effort, one in which there was no differece in perceived energy output (or access depeding on how you view it) when grounded or in mid-air. Suddenly this perception has shifted.
I would be interested to hear from a Kalenjin, or anyone who would take the time to do a race or workout while bounding the whole time, which is not to be confused with taking 10 foot leaps, but instead taking a normal stride length for race pace while hitting that on/off switch in a conscious manner with each footstrike.
It should be of some note...Jesse Owens, when asked how he ran so fast, said something to the effect that he kept his feet on the ground for a minimal amount of time, which of course sounds obvious, but can truly only be related to others who could do the same. Michael Johnson's website has information alluding to the same phenomenon, that his feet are on the ground for less time than his competitors. Certainly there are others who have stated the same.
Well, blast this naiveté out of me hodgie-san! :)
