You're kidding, right? Farah was clearly the 3rd best half marathon runner in the field today, which I'm sure he would acknowledge. He placed as high as he could hope to place in this field. And, since you ask, if Ryan Hill enters a 10k against the world's best, he will not be a champion.
The Ethiopians Farah "outkicked" at the end of the race were done from running a sub-14 5k segment. They didn't go in trying to run "the best they could on the day." They RAN TO WIN and blew up. That's how African runners do it. Go big or don't go at all.
If I run a perfectly-paced 13:45 PR and catch a 13:30 guy who tried to WIN a 13:00 race and blew up, I wouldn't be proud. I'd be embarrassed that I wasn't contending for the WIN.
