It was great, but he really should thank Centro for not doing the 3000!

The 3000 is his sweet spot. If he can run under 13:00 he can run sub-7:30, and I think he can do both right now. The only thing I wonder about is whether he will have that blistering kick at the end of a decently-paced 5K in Rio. He showed his promise in outkicking Rupp and True at USATF, but faltered a bit at WC's. I'm sure that is what they will be working on from now until August.

I would consider him equivalent to a 13 min man at this point, barring injury this summer. He will never run 12:45 like the Ethiopians, but wasn't the Olympics won in ~13:45 in 2012? This indoors he's had a great close off of a fast and slow pace, so I see him being in great position to compete for a medal outdoors.
That being said, obviously a few guys had bad days today and outdoors is always more competitive. He could easily improve outdoors, yet fall further out of contention.
Hill seems a step away from the next level right now. He has been at this indoor 3K level for several years but not sure if he can actually go 7:32 or better yet. If he can do 13:00 and 7:32 than he is a real medal threat in any final slower than 13:05 - 13:10. So far I've never noticed him being a factor in any international or diamond league 5000. If he starts running at the level Rupp or Solinsky have, then he is a medal favorite with his kicking ability. For now he's still a dark horse. Seems like he may be having a breakthrough though. Let's see how he does at PRE.

Do you think that on foreign running forums they trash their own runners for doping suspicion? Makhloufi, El G, Komen, etc?
You want us to be like places with no free thinking and state run media? Ok Donald.

My recollection was that his "breakthrough" race in my mind was the Boston Indoor Games 7:34 against Geb&Geb in 2014. So this weekend's result wasn't a huge shock but certainly a great result.
Now as others pointed out he has been a more successful 3000m guy than 5000m, but he is also young and I expect him to improve at the 5000m distance. Competition is stacked in the Olympics 5000m, though. Medals aren't easy to come by.

They'd be like Letsrun.
Despite not coming home with a Gold, Ryan Hill had the best performance of any American male this weekend. Beating Caleb Ndiku, who nearly took down Mo in the Beijing 5k, and Iguider, isn't messing around.
Centro's win was impressive, but with Souleiman fading like he did that becomes a race that we all expect him to win, no disrespect to Willis. And as much as I loved watching Boris lead wire-to-wire we have to realize that it's unlikely anyone in that field will be in the final at Rio this summer.
Ryan Hill is the real deal--does he have the most lethal last 200 of any American-born runner ever (except maybe Robby Andrews)?
odd to see Alamirew going backwards after essentially starting his top level track career with 7:27 or 7:28 years ago.
Well done Hill. Movin' on up for sure.
But, admit it Hill fans, some of whom are Rupp haters, your man Ryan has yet to match Rupp's outdoor 5K career. In terms of PR, and finish in World's last summer, Hill still has everything to prove. It would be great to see him medal this summer, or win. Vamos a ver.
Interesting to compare PRs at age 25: Hill: 7:34, 13:05, Rupp: 7:42, 13:06...but a very nasty 26:48. This was before "Speedy Rupp Olympic v2.0" was unveiled in 2012.

Gebremeskel went 12:46 in 2012...speaking of him, where was he this weekend? He has the fastest time in the world this year, yet Alamirew was selected instead of him and he completely bombed the final (unless Gebremeskel just didn't wanna run world indoors, which I'd be surprised by since he has in 2010, 2012, 2014).
Does the indoor medal stand ever remotely resemble the outdoor medal stand?
Hill had a nice indoor season and a nice kick in a slow race.
He isn't Rupp or even True...
Oh please.

I'm not sure why we are bringing it up but Hill is a better 3k runner than True, indoors or out, so I am glad it was Hill we had in this race. Frankly I don't think Rupp will ever beat Hill in a championship 3k again. But I'm happy to have all 3 of them.

I think that you are a bit optimistic about his 5,000 ability, and as a "friendly amendment" to your post I would point out his PR is actually 13:16 as listed by the IAAF profile site which is
http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/united-states/ryan-hall-188874.
He may have not yet run his best possible 5,000, though, and truthfully it was 13:16.03 so technical statisticians could call it "thirteen-low."
However, to suggest that he can race for a medal is fallacious, perhaps even incorrect. Especially in a slow race like you suggest, how can a marathoner be expected to close in a fast last lap or even a "wind-up finale" type of race?

Not running the marathon trials was a great decision for Hill. His speed is better than ever! Is Hill going to be running Boston this year? I know it's a good pay day for him. Will Schumacher allow it? Or do you think that will hinder his closing speed? Anyway, Hills range from 1500-Marathon is Impressive!
Looks like all the weights, having a bunch of kids, and reduction in running finally gave him a serious kick. Finally gets a medal on the world stage. God, the Invisible Coach, sure works in mysterious ways!

Seems like Hill is capable of running 12:55 in a fast Diamond League race this year. Unless we're talking about Ryan Hill Hall
