The things we find attractive in a partner are still very much hangovers from hunter/gatherer societies.
We lived this way for hundreds of thousands of years, and so we're pre-wired to find the traits that increased the chances of survival and healthy offspring attractive.
Taller generally means stronger, more athletic, and in a society in which these are the primary ways to gain status, it's obviously going to be an attractive trait.
