I do 8 X 200 AFTER my regular speed work. I don't take a nap between the 200s though.

Sure it's relevant, as HR skyrockets due to the skeletal muscle pump, and in longer sprints, extremely high O2 consumption and need for acid clearance.
I think what really happens is that serious distance training causes cumulative stress injury, whereas sprint training doesn't. Those sprinters not done in by acute trauma are generally healthy, whereas an old distance runner is worn down no matter what.
