Mary Akor, fresh off a 2 yr drug suspension, is leading the Carlsbad Marathon and is on Trials qualifying pace. If she qualifies does she plan to race the trials? Thoughts, feeling about that if she does?
Obviously she is now eligible and could if she qualifies, but she would be lining up next to lots of ladies she stole money from.
It is official, she just won in 2:41:24 so she now has a qualifying time on an eligible course. Let's she what she does. Was there prize money in Carlsbad?
Found it - yes, there was $1000 for first.
Back to her old ways, running smaller marathons for money where the chances of getting tested are small.

Every race with prize money needs a rule that states that no prize money will be awarded to any runner who has previously been suspended for a doping offense. Even if the USATF or USADA says someone is eligible to race doesn't mean that a privately owned race couldn't have it's own rules for eligibility for prize money.
This is so bad for the sport. Mary doped and stole for years, and everyone knew it too. She was a dirty racer too, beyond the doping. She got a slap on the wrist with the 2 yr ban. Races need to wake up and do something positive for the sport by banning past dopers for awards.

Reading this thread, I just lost a lot of respect for that race.
She cherry picks race to steal all the prize money she can.
Since the race started they have tweeted 4 times:
1 to announce the men's marathon winner
1 to announce the men's half marathon winner
1 to announce the women's half marathon winner
1 to congratulate everyone who raced
Nothing about the women's marathon winner.
My question to the race is why allow a drug cheat to enter and win your race if you are embarrassed of her and try and hide it if she wins.
Race directors take ownership of your prize money races. You make the rules, so own them and be proud of them.

Are there publicly owned races out there?
How would you expect that to happen when out very own country allows former convicted drug cheats like Dennis Mitchell to be a paid coach?!
Wonder if Akor has a awyer friend threatening suits to RDs balking at her entry? The tweets might indiate they weren't happy with her participation.
Anyone know if this race has doping controls?
Also, 2nd place appears to have qualified for the trials as well. Wasn't she the one that torpedoed her chance at a previous attempt by racing and winning a tough half the week before?
Like most medium size marathons, they advertise drug testing is possible.
But most athletes have learned it is not very likely you will get tested unless the USADA decides randomly to show up or specifically target someone, because the races don't usually budget for testing, or if so not much.
Bump to be sure that Carlsbad knows how disappointed we are they let Mary Akor race there and win/steal money and to let Mary and other races know we are watching and will call her out.

Another bump-- it's so simple: more races need to adopt guidelines like this with no tolerance. Carlsbad can save themselves (and their sponsors) the embarassment of paying a drug cheat by adopting these rules.

Kudos to Monumental! The race I work for has a similar written policy, although not as extensively written:
"Athletes who have served suspensions related to PED use are not eligible to be part of the VCM Invited Runner Program nor are they eligible to win prize money at this event."
Well she served her 2year ban. Why are you still harassing her? Perhaps she has made efforts to ensure she's clean now. Maybe not, I don't know. Perhaps she is a bad person. But the RD can not legally refuse her entry AFTER a served suspension. I understand people being skeptical of cheats, thinking they'll always cheat, but it's not fair to the people who actually do learn and clean up their act after serving a suspension. They'll never impose a lifetime ban for a first offence, humans are prone to making bad decisions.

1. What law says the RD can't legally refuse her entry? Can't a race set its own entry requirements? What's this supposed law that you are relying on?
2, Even if you have to let convicted cheats run (and I'm highly skeptical of this actually being the law), every race should have the same rules from the Monumental Marathon linked above that deny prize money to convicted cheaters.
