This is such a funny comment I see around here often. They are high school kids, most of them running 4:20 or faster have that gear 365 days a year.
Does anyone else have college stories about running a track 1600/mile at the end of XC season and decent guys PR'd? I think our graduate assistant was a D3 national champ at 5k and his mile PR was from the post XC season mile run. (May have invented the PR part in my head, but he definitely ran a ridiculous time for a November mile with his teammates.) I understand this potentially raises lots of other questions, but I personally don't see how it's that difficult for a young athlete to run a good mile time off of XC fitness.
I agree 100%. These kids are training for a 5k in which you run the first 300 meters all out. They are all in good mile shape pretty much year round. Now running a good mile after half or marathon training is a totally different matter. Still a good run for the kid but this "in December!!!!!" thing is stupid.
