Why wouldn't he burn it to get him 30th? 30th may win them a national title.
If Jim Rosa had run with his brother at Pac 12s and finished 9th, the score between Stanford and Colorado would have been Colorado 48 - Stanford 49. Basically a tie.
If Colorado gets 5 in the top 30, they are winning the meet. 30th may be huge for them. The pac 12 results would scare the crap out of me if I was Colorado.
48 to 49 should not scare any team that can score 60 something at nats. They weren't trying at Pac 12s and they, especially Ben, jogged it in the last 400 last weekend.
Both years Ben was nowhere (7th 14 sec ahead of 21), 13th (6 sec behind 7th and 19 sec ahead of 21) and now 21st (25 sec out of 7th) at regions) all season and ran top 10. Finishes at Nats are mostly described by a bell curve. Ben is in the part of the curve that could win the race but he is more distracted by school than most everyone else so he doesn't race hard during the season but now the season is over so watch out.
I have trouble putting him into a top 40 finish.
There is a difference between fresh legs, and comeback legs.
If they all play into a Cheserek centered race, its going to get very quick in the last mile and a half, that doesn't help a guy who is just coming back.
Even worse would be a few guys taking a flier and pushing it early, that would be like a bowling ball in the deep end for a guy coming back.
I think the healthiest team wins, i think that is syracuse.

Interesting point about Saarel though he is "clutch" and in cross anything can happen. however the rest of CU is really deep and if Saarel doesn't perform than they have more people to fill his shoes. Cuse' has the best top 3 and all of them will be top 20 no doubt but the 4th and 5th are going to need to have a good. no great race which is the deciding factor.
Colorado wins with or without Saarel. If consistent historical trends hold, Colorado and just a few other teams will have their best races of the year, while most schools will run worse than they did at the end of September. It's usually 1/4 top/solid performances to 3/4 bottom/weak performances.
This is coaching. Since the days of Vin Lanana ended at Stanford, they've primarily been a weak nationals performer. If anybody comes close to Colorado, it's Syracuse.
Saarel finishes 16th; one place ahead of Thomas Curtin.

Well if Stanford goes 5-11-14-23-45 and Colorado goes 8-13-24-25-30 then Colorado loses with all 5 in the top 30.

I think the more interesting question is "where does Wetmore think Ben will finish"?
Ben is a 5-10 talent when right- Wetmore has lots of guys in the pipe that are a 30ish talent, he doesn't have many that are a top 10 talent. If Ben is a 30 and Wetmore runs him, Wetmore is giving away 20-25 points in '16 or '17. Is he that desperate to shore up a title this year? Doubt it. IMO Wetmore wouldn't burn a Ben redshirt for a likely 2-5 point upgrade (Or have him run 6th even). He burns the redshirt only if he has a high level of confidence that Ben is right and the reward will be a 10-20 point lower score.
I'm guessing Ben is 9-12 and Wetmore thinks he may need a 12 (or even a 20) over a 30ish. You are right though- he is very worried about Stanford when he does the math. He could lose with 5 in top 30 (unlikely but possible). If Ben is 12, and the other guys are healthy- there's no way they lose.
That being said- lots of recent examples of studs showing up at Regionals after not running all season, running respectable "rust buster" at Regionals, and then fading to 30ish at nationals, ala Jared Ward in '13. It's tough to do even if the runner is right.

Sick/injured guy finishes 1 spot ahead of guy who beat Ches, Rotish, Koech, Knight, McGorty... Saarel 16th as Curtin finishes 17th...
This is 100000000 to 1 type prediction.
Good luck with that.
Curtin is going to be top 10 no doubt in my mind.

Wetmore isn't going to run him for a 30th place.

Wetmore doesn't need a top 10 finish from Ben to get a national championship, he just needs his top 5 (whoever they are) to get the lowest score out of 31 teams
He didn't pull the redshirt on Ben solely because he thought he could be top 10, he did it w/ hopes he'd be in the their top 5, and could make an impact
If Ben is their 5th and he gets 30th, whether they win or not he made an impact (by this I mean their score could have been worse, imagine him 30th, and Colorado wins by only 1 point)
So, it seems people are thinking Wetmore pulled the redshirt off Ben because Ben may be his 5th runner, maybe a 50:50 chance. And that could make a difference.IMO this is silly talk. Wetmore wouldn't role the dice like that at the expense of future years. He believes that if Ben is right, and he must think he is, he's top 15. He's not going to throw away a redshirt on a hope and a dream that Ben may run 5th on the team if everything goes right.

Colorado's 5th man finished 46th at pre nationals. That means 80th at NCAA. He wanted options/security for NCAA.

I'm guessing if the Buffs saw two Rosas ahead of them, they might have put a little more into it.
Dressel fell during the race btw, just so ya'll know. Check his Instagram for proof

...but I don't think that he (or another Buff) is now immune to falling... Reality is that the 5th Buff came 46th. The 6th Buff did not compensate.
Only 2 or 3 of the 250+ in the race fall most years. Not something you need to cover but you may be right that Wetmore added Ben not because of what Ben could or couldn't do but because he knows one of the other 5 is about to have a bad race. We can all think the entire Colorado squad mailed it in at regionals but maybe one of the guys in front of Ben was all out.

And neither is Stanford, Syracuse or ches
Judging from this finish video of the Mountain Regional, CU's top two (Murphy and Pearson, 7th/8th place) seem to be taking it easy. Rest of CU guys, hard to tell.

That's a fact. Irrelevant, but a fact.
The point was that Wetmore would fell like an idiot if one of his guys fell, twisted an ankle or lost a shoe during the race and he had decided to leave Saarel (who could be his 4th, 5th or 6th man) at home...
The other teams don't have that luxury.
