The salary isn't too high. The performance is unacceptable. Masback and his cronies should be replaced by a new crew. The search for a new CEO should begin here. Maybe a top executive from ESPN, Nike, NHL, NFL, MLB, who can take USATF and make it a product in every household. The contract should state the terms of employment. And should specify the mandatory performance expectations of the new CEO. We need to put an end to favoritism, cronyism, and Ivy League window dressing at USATF.
1. The NHL? Are you kidding me?
2. The difference is that non-profits are really run by the BOD which are volunteers. I would suggest a change in governance before looking at the CEO.
Princeton/Oxford/Yale Law/WCP...that's legit. The guy would be pulling down $1+ million/yr if he were still practicing law. If you want to have someone with those credentials heading your organization, you need to offer him something competitive. That's not to say he's been worth it though.
I doesnt matter if the new CEO has a high school diploma or a Ph.D from Max Blanc Institute. It only matters if the new CEO candidate has a proven track record of creating a successful sports media company. If we can find someone good, pay her/him $1 million a year, if that what it takes. After a year, if there is no concrete improvements, then we bring in another crew. We all know what that's like. USATF employment should be based on performance. Unlike the system now.
"Mr. Masback, what is your reaction to the assertions that you are an overpaid, do-nothing-for-your-salary, stiff?"

People who complain about Masback must be too young to remember how abysmal and ineffectual Ollan Cassell was. Much of the energy of the organization's press operation used to go into trying to convince people that Cassell didn't totally suck. They were never convincing.
Daaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmn!

This is correct. That is the going rate for a masback. Maybe that's not what USATF wants, but it's what we bought, and we are paying him much less than he'd get in the private sector.
There are no guarantees the cheaper presidents would be any better; they might possibly be worse. Is the 200k that they might be able to save the difference between track being a major league sport and an also-ran in the US? Is it going to double the medal count? Of course not.
Masback is expensive, but I'm not outraged by his comp. And if we want anyone with comparable credentials, we're going to be paying at least as much.
I didn't take the time to read this entire thread, and I don't really know anything about Craig Masback. However, just looking at the USATF page on him, he's a winner and a success in everything he's done.
If you say he earns too much, look at his credentials. The guy has a perfect education and was a senior executive of a successful law firm. I guarantee he made twice his current salary there.
Who cares about credentials and salary. If Masback were really that successful he'd accept $ONE per year and spend the money on track and field. He's a working stiff just like the rest of us. The only thing that matters is his performance. Are you satisfied with USATF ? Do you think there is a mismanagement issue. Are you happy with the Worlds coverage. Those kinds of issues. List them out yourself and post them on Letsrun.com. Figureheads and window dressing are a dime a dozen. Leaders aren't.

i like craig masback just fine and i think he's doing a decent job as head of usatf. but he certainly was not a "senior executive" at wilmer. he was a senior associate. a much different thing (and the usatf website says this accurately).
This thread says it all why T&F and Distance Running takes a back seat to almost all other sports and why baseball, football and basketball players make millions and US distance runners makes pennies. What other sport has such a high number of whiny girly boys?.
Expect to be successful in life and you probably will be. Be a whiny girly boy and then continue to whine and work at McDonalds.
WOW, adjusted for inflation, Craiggy Masbacky makes more than Alan Webb does. And Craiggy doesn't even run. He doesn't even do that much for a CEO.
I wonder how many of you are gonna get hot and bothered over what I say now.

I met Craig Masbeck once. He was a really cool guy. I went to school with his niece Libby, she ran track and XC. She was a real cutie.
