What does a CEO of USATF make?
What does a CEO of USATF make?
He must not make as much as the Hanson Bros who donate 200 thousand a year. Either that or the Hansons choose to invest more in our sport than the CEO? Mr. Masback does speak well and looks good in a suit. The true sign of an educated Ivy leaguer.
$400,000 plus or minus.
you're just jealous.
That ain't enough for the shit you have to put up with in that position.
Thanks Ollan....Have'nt heard from you in a long time...How r things???
There are volunteers in that organization that put up with ten times the shit and don't get anything out of it.

Hanson's really donate 200K? If that's the truth that's one of the most amazing things I've heard.

Non profits must report the top 5 salaries of its employees on tax forms to the IRS. Some people have found this information on websites devoted to such things.
I also think a non-profit has to list how many people make >$50K (or some amount) although does not have to list the names.
Okay, it took me 5 minutes (including registering at the site to find the answer to your question). You really should take advantage of the internet.
According to IRS form 990 for 2003, Masback made $369,321 plus $43,822 in benefits.
(need to register to see the 990s).
USATF 2003 Compensation:
Name Postion Total Comp
Craig Masback, CEO, $413,143
Jill Pilgrim, General Counsel, $163,220
James Elias, CFO/COO, $154,816
Michael Conley, Exec Dir of Elite Athletes, $124,804
Brooks Johnson, High Performance Division Chair, $107,200
Peter Mahoney, Dir of High Performance, $99,837
Ivan Cropper, Dir of Marketing, $97,549
Jill Geer, Dir of Communications, $86,918
Obscene
Very disturbing. Indianapolis is not an expensive city to live.

Is this a joke?
What do Conley and Mahoney do? I'm an athlete and see there names all the time but had no idea they were bringing in 100k a year. How about paying the marketing guy their salary and getting some publicity. Brooks Johnson bringing in 100k a year as well. Who does he coach?
Thanks for this info. I'm sick of these guys treating distance runner's like ****. Next time it happens to me, I won't think, oh they must be underpaid.
So what? Everyone can spend their own money the way that they see just. If the Hansons donate, great. If Masback doesn't, so what?

Among other things:
Conley handles all the concerns of the elite athletes, especially when it involves competing in international events, whether as individuals or as part of the US team. I believe this also includes any USADA presence at domestic events too.
Mahoney handles the organization of the Indoor & Outdoor Champs and deals with the administrative functions of the Visa Championship Series (old GST events).
I'm not a strong advocate for how USATF governs the sport; however, I don't think the salaries listed are out of line. Unless you know what the job descriptions and responsibilities are for the various positions, and how long someone has held a position, it doesn't make sense to feel that the amounts are unreasonable.
They're not unreasonable if YOU are the one getting them.
i don't think most of those salaries are out of line; for the work, say, the general counsel does on drugs issues alone that would be a below market price for a decent attorney to have in-house, even in indianapolis. most of the other salaries seem in line with what someone who coordinates elite athletes, runs the books, and whatnot does. remember, if you want decent people you have to pay a competitive wage. masback's, however, seems a bit excessive. i would have considered half of that to be reasonable. just wondering if perhaps his 2003 salary was an abberation for some reason; i don't want to register to check this out.
The 2004 information isn't listed, only through 2003, but I agree, $400K to run an organization with $19 million in revenue seems high, particularly when lined up against the other salaries of the USATF.
