What's up guys? I've got an important question for you. Trying to figure out if there could be something wrong with my top runner.
A little back story here, sorry if it's a bit long, but it's also a bit complicated:
Our top runner is a sub 15:50 kid, that's his PR at least. He trains very hard, and is one of the most humble and wonderful kids I've ever coached. He does everything I say exactly and I couldn't ask for anything more. This is why I care so dang much that we figure this issue out.
This year, his junior year, he has been struggling immensely. We had a talk after last track season about how he wanted to reach the "next level" and wanted to know what he needed to do. I responded by upping his mileage a bit and really hammering down on his correct easy day/hard day paces and everything. He put in an incredible segment of summer training and all signs pointed toward a break out year. It's his junior year.
I know what you're thinking, he's over-training. That may be true, but over the last month we've dropped his miles from 70 to nearly 45 to compensate for this (gradually of course). His workouts have been home runs, but he can't seem to put it together come race time. We've had his iron level checked and it was within the normal limits so it's not that.
I understand it takes a bit to recover from over-training, but he's really been having this problem all season long. His times are all about the same as last year and not any faster.
One thing he has been experiencing over the last couple races, that although they're getting faster and he's feeling better, he's mentioned that he feels a bit light-headed during these races. He experienced a concussion back in June so we were worried it could be from that, but he's been training very well and feeling good besides race day, so we thought maybe it was just mental too.
This kid is great, he is very diligent and deserving of success, I just want to figure it out. He's a very highly anxious and stressed out person at times so we were thinking that maybe he's just putting too much pressure on himself. I don't know, I'm really at a loss here. Could he also have electrolyte problems? I don't know. How long does it take to recover from over-training or a concussion?
Sparknotes!:
1. Junior boy running like crap, feels light headed during races. Not running time that his workouts indicate despite being careful with recovery.
2. Got a concussion in July, also a highly anxious and stressed out kid at times.
3. Has anyone heard of concussions still affecting a kid 6 months later?
4. Need to figure out what's wrong with him. Regionals this weekend.
