I assume it's not really that high and is some sort of mistake, but then again, maybe not - Look at this pic:

If that's 1000 elites then how come so many of them are behind the lead pack?
There aren't 1000 elites in the whole world, not even Kenyans.

My first thought is that if there are that many running similar times, then they are "average", not "elite".
I can imagine a number of people capable of running under 2:20 or even 2:30, not really good enough to get a chance to compete overseas, who train for a while and then give up. I don't think they're saying 1000 elites in the sense of being world-class professionals, capable of breaking 2:10, but elite in the broader sense.
Kip/Mike types of Kenya, beware:
“There have been cases where some athletes have tended to cheat and cut corners but this time round we have sealed all those loopholes. We expect a good race on Sunday.â€

The 1,000 elites thing is the equivalent to saying "You're all champions!"
Just checked 2014 and 2013 and in that 2 year period there were 479 athletes who ran 2:18 or faster. So figure 100-200 for each additional year.
This is men only. So women, add another 30% or so.
1000 is possible if runners from Uganda, Ethiopia and maybe Tanzania show up.
Where are those links? I was only able to find top-10
2:12 = $20,000. Wouldn't that be easy money for some Kenyans?

Hard course.
Altitude.
Every American elite runner's nightmare: 1000 Kenyan elites in the same race!

Haha look at the lad in the Kenyan vest going all out at what I assume to be an early stage of the race. The East African mentality is mint
We'll, 100% of the guys in that picture look elite to me.
Don't see any hobby jiggers there
The population Of Kenya is about 45 million. They are not all good runners. As far as I know the majority of the elite distance runners come from the Kanjin tribe, of which there are about 5 million people.
I've spent time in Nairobi. You average Nairobi 9-5 office worker with 2.4 children is much like an office worker in any other big city: time poor, overweight and in serious need of more exercise and a better diet.
Could there be 1,000 athletes in this race that would be classed as 'elite' anywhere else in the world? Probably, but I doubt it very much
Peter Kosgei ran for Hamilton College, a D3 team.

Whether there are 500 or 1,000 sub 2:18 guys (on a tough course at altitude) in the race, the fact is that Kenyans dominate marathons all over the world every weekend of the year, so that there are likely hundreds, if not thousands, who got the funds to travel overseas to run, but that there are also very many not quite as good at present who are there in Kenya training with the same people and just haven't been tabbed for foreign races yet. It's expensive to travel from Kenya to Europe, Asia, or North America, and you need to stand out in a sea of talent. For instance, it's between $811 and $1400 to travel from LA to Nairobi (no idea about the reverse flight). Per capita Income (PPP) in Kenya is $2780, about twice that of Ethiopia. And that's way, way above the income of the typical Kenyan villager in Kalenjin territory.

Wrong Peter Kosgei, bro.
According to this link
http://www.all-athletics.com/en-us/world-marathon-lists
1472 guys worldwide ran sub-2:20 in 2011 (I tried the more recently links but they didn't seem to work for me).
I didn't bother counting, but, by eyeballing it, it looks like about half those guys are Kenyans (up front it was well over 50%, less than that in the 2:17-2:20 range).
I doubt they all ever run in the same race, but it wouldn't surprise me if Kenya had close to 1000 sub-2:20 guys.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
