What a dismal article,

It reads like a 4th grader, stream-of-consciousness. ADHD, all over the place, and I don't get the point. What the hell is Jim Adler babbling?

Short-sighted and ignorant of an american to enter such a post. Having experienced both cultures, us British are highly structured and civilized. Too the contrary, I find you americans as quite barbaric.

...typical stuck up English broad.....think they are this highly cultured society. Has anyone in England seen a dentist in the past 300 yrs?
I have to say I wish neck kerchiefs would come back in style along with ascot ties and straw boater hats. They look so dashing!

Don't you elementary americans have some football to watch? Standard practice for simple minds. Delighted to not be part of your peasantry.
Hmm. You can't understand a really clear article and feel badly for other people's poor education?
I don't think that you demonstrate your superior education by concluding from the haphazard grammar and writing of one informal essay to "the poorly educated British of the 1960s." Whatever the writing is like, I very much appreciate hearing about some of the racing and training programs of the best British runners of the 1960s and 1970s.
Almost everything British is overrated. Their judicial system in particular is corrupt, twisted, and barbaric. Yeah, I used to think certain accents were a sign of brilliance and sophistication. Nope.

I find the lack of culture of americans as vile and disgusting.

Something about how all those upstanding clean heroes from the 60's would have been so much better with today's tracks, sponsors and coaches.
No way would not being allowed to use amphetamines anymore be a problem. Wouldn't slow them down a bit.
Assuming that you're correct, and I seriously doubt that, why would guys from the 60s and 70s not be even faster today? They'd have access to better PEDs.

Our (British) judicial system?
In fact, the United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population.
But it has almost a quarter of the world's prisoners!
The United States leads the world in producing prisoners, with around 2.3 million behind bars.
Next highest is China, four times the population of the USA but with only 1.6 million in prison.
The USA has 751 people in prison or jail for every 100,000 in population, compared with Britain, 151.
The only conclusion is that the Yanks are more criminally minded than those in civilized countries.
You realize we are made up of British ancestors, right?

Edited to reflect reality.

"How did we achieve this, especially as all of us were working full time? Adcocks was a gas fitter, Jim Hogan a groundsman, Heatley a gardener, Hill a research scientist, Ian Stewart a gunsmith, myself a bricklayer/plasterer etc."
It says "bricklayer/plasterer", not "author" or "journalist". If he had been really good at English prose, he might have ended up in a different career. Hats off to Jim for writing something in AW.
I think he's saying that high mileage and hard graft are good, and that British distance running needs more of it. He is not the first to observe this.

No.

Either you are trolling or English is not your first language. I suspect the former.
