First off Comrades is the most competitive ultra there is hands down.
20,000 runners, $30,000+ to to win etc.
I toed the line there with some guys (some around 2:10 in the marathon maybe 2:08 for a PR). They were all pretty light and fast! (And Max and I got destroyed). A lot of these guys were local South Africans.
What if some of these guys had the opportunity to travel internationally and do Mountain-Ultra-Trail Races? I'm sure they would do very well at many of the events.
The point that needs to be made here though is it's not about just being an ultra distance...it's about the type of trail (road vs dirt trail vs mountain) and the elevation profile of the race. A "SkyRunning" event versus a dirt trail in CA is a totally different event even if both 50km. A road 100km vs a mountain 100km/100-miler is totally different. The big elevation changes require a bit more musculature in the legs sometimes.
Would a local guy from South Africa who does well at Comrades do well at most MUT Running events though? Probably! These guys can run 55+ miles with a big net uphill (read: thousands of feet of elevation gain) at close to 6-min flat/mile pace. They know how to fuel and they know how to tackle big hills. When you have that kind of aerobic engine, 7-min pace for 50 miles on dirt single track with 10,000' of climbing isn't that hard.
