Good academics/Pretty good runner

LetsRun:

I'm a senior male runner looking to run in college, and wanted to know what you guys would do in my situation:

Prs:

1600m: 4:28.2

3200m: 9:25.9

3mi XC: 15:16

GPA: 3.66 unweighted/4.31 weighted taking the toughest possible schedule

Scores: 33/ACT, a couple of good AP tests, a couple of not so good ones, no SAT

If you were me, would you try and walk on at a mid-to-head of the pack d1 school, or go d3 and be a pretty good runner who contributed to the team? Money, thankfully is not a huge issue.

Identify a small set of schools that best meet your academic qualifications and needs. You don't say what you want to study, so it's not possible to recommend schools, but there are people in your high school who can help with that.

Only use running as a tie breaker.

It depends on many things.

Most importantly, what do you WANT to major in?

How hard are you trying to run those times?

How hard are you trying to get those grades?

Have you any idea if you want a large or small school?

A school in a big city or in the middle of nowhere?

Go to the best school that you can get into, and that seems like a good fit for you. "Good fit" can certainly include consideration of the XC/track program.

One way to gauge the program is to look at the B team runners; if there is a hungry but happy group of them, the coach probably isn't a bad dude.

Major wise I was thinking political science or business and running is a must for me. I don't really care about location. To be honest I wasn't trying to hard to get those grades. Size isn't a deal breaker but a medium sized school is prefered.

Assuming that you can lower your times to sub 420/920, go to Notre Dame. One of the best undergrad business schools in the country. Men's program is good and getting better with new coach. Fun school, too.

UVA would be a good choice, but they're so stacked that they probably wouldn't let you walk on.

Georgetown's got a great polysci program and an excellent MD to Distance program.

Penn would be great. Excellent b school and very good distance program.

I'd look at D3 schools, too, but don't know how good their polysci or biz programs are.

Take a look at Emory, then.
