Hello! I am a 16 year old female cross country and track runner (a senior in high school). I have had some mild success (placed top ten in my league), but nothing close to super fast.
When I was 9 years old, I went through severe anorexia. I was hospitalized, tube fed, and the works. I recovered and just "drifted" under the radar for the next five or so years.
In my freshman year, I found cross country, and fell in love. I was originally very slow (29 minutre 5k) but improved my time by 10 minutes. I also lost a lot of weight during this period and was forced to regain it during my sophomore year. I continued to pr and was happy with my performance.
In my junior season, things started out great. I was number one on the team and even had hopes of being top in the state. However, I was told that I needed to gain weight again, which caused me to start binging. Originally, the binging was not so bad, but as the year progressed, it began to really affect my running. I received some brief treatment for my eating disorder, during which I had to take two months off from running. I started to get back in shape, but the binging just got worse.
Now I can't even go a day without binging. I have gone from 90 pounds to 130 pounds in a short amount of time, and I can barely run now. My senior year xc season has just started, and I am really struggling.
My question is…should I take a break from running (at least competitively) to recover from my ed? Running is taking a lot of my energy and it is so tied up with my eating disorder.
My tentative plan is to take some time off from running to get my eating under control and lose a little bit of weight (this would be closely monitored so that I wouldn't become underweight). Once I feel comfortable with food, I would start running again and begin to train for marathons. I do not plan to run in college, as I want to go straight into marathon training.
I eventually want to run marathons, and know that I have plenty of time to get in shape for that, as most women peak in their 30s.
Any advice would be great! Thank you so so much!
