The roads are for cars. If you insist on running/cycling on the road/on the shoulder of a road, then you have decided to risk your life. Even the best drivers aren't perfect and a 2 ton car going anywhere from 35-60 MPH is going to cause serious harm/death when a mistake happens.
I find it bone chillingly scary that any motorist could even begin to think like this.
Rest in peace, Cameron. I hope the authorities find the truth.
She's gotta get felony hit and run, right?
I mean at the very least
Here's another story on the local news about Cameron's father going ahead with an Ironman on Sunday, the day after his memorial service. Cameron was his coach.
Cameron apparently also donated his organs, including his heart. Whoever that recipient was really won the lottery, getting upgraded with an elite runner's heart.
I wish posts could have "like" buttons ^
I saw this post about his father still doing the Ironman. Which also explains why he was in Chatt. and not with the other Zap athletes (someone questioned this a few pages back). Apparently they were supposed to do the IM together, his dad still did it just one day after burying him. Heartbreaking.
The Washington Post published a story yesterday about Cameron's death and his father's competition in the Ironman:
Why? Its 100% accurate. Roads *are* for cars and the risk for others is real. Ive run and cycled 1000s of miles and I accept the risk. I don't act like it doesn't exist. I find it scary someone thinks like *you*.rip Mr. Bean

Very sad. Was doing what he was supposed to do, running against traffic, freaking driver, driving same direction, so she had to cross center, said "sun was in her eyes", a check of her cell phone is in order. RIP.
Only the first two posts on this thread shown when I posted this, not sure why. Sorry to be repetitive. Hopefully they get to the bottom of this, the drivers account does not sound believable.

Word on the street down here in Chattanooga is that the PD eagerly want multiple criminal charges and are getting push back from the DA. Drivers rule, alas.

The DA is the person who looks at the evidence gathered in any investigation and decides whether or not they will win IF they decide to charge someone. Many DAs will not charge anyone if they don't really think they will win. I've seen this myself.
Hopefully the police are diligent in collecting everything necessary for the DA to charge this woman.
I see this happen so many times where police do all that they can to collect evidence as diligently as possible, but the DA will not prosecute if they don't think they can win. It's sad. I'm praying that this is not the last we hear of this story.
You seem completely clueless about what goes on on the roads every single day all over this country. We have stratospheric records for cars and trucks hitting pedestrians, cyclists, and runners, and nearly every one of us narrowly misses cars and trucks hurtling at us every day. There are your aggressive drivers who are always a few feet from an accident at any moment, the ones hurtling through the intersections after the red light, those making blind turns, passing on blind stretches of road, those that take left and right turns through crosswalks with no regard whatsoever for who is there. They come to a stop to make a turn and then pay no attention to anyone crossing in front of them. Drivers need to be put on notice that they are culpable for what they do behind the wheel.
In 2013, over 4700 pedestrians, 3/4 male, were killed by cars, while around 743 cyclists were killed. Those are pretty shockingly high numbers. I wonder how many of the pedestrians were runners.
I wonder if unhappy emails to the DA would have any effect.....
And yet another reason why in spite of everything the US will remain a third world sh*thole the rest of the world.
I'm pretty certain that Cuba has more sensible laws and law enforcement than the kind of crap you pull off.
I don't think it is quite this simplistic. There's risk in everything we do, but there are laws (even traffic laws) that are to be followed to substantially reduce the risk for others, even runners and cyclists. There are no laws preventing runners from running on the side of the road. There are laws, backed up by quite a bit of data, that state that you shouldn't be using your phone while driving to ensure the safety of yourself, your passengers and others using the road. If it is determined that she was using her phone while this accident occurred, she should be punished. At the same time, I think jail time or prison time as punishment is way over-used in this country, and we should be much more creative when handing out sentences for many crimes. I feel that she should receive some other type of punishment, like losing her license for a substantial period of time or even not having a phone (not sure if this could ever be enforced). She should also receive community service aimed at advocacy.

Community service on the side of the road, and she can hope that distracted drivers who are texting are able to see her as they approach her.
More sadness in Cameron's family, as his grandmother just passed away too.
According to her obituary, "Her heart was broken by the death of her sweet grandson, Cameron Bean who was hit by a car while out for a run on Sept. 19, and died on Sept. 21."

For some, the world goes on. For others, their world is destroyed. People who drive carelessly for whatever reason need to hear things like this to realize the long-lasting impact their recklessness has on people.
