He's just staying in decent shape right now for something much, much bigger! He knows that he's prone to injury if he ramps it up too soon. He'll be ready for the Trails; FOR SURE - just wait!!!

Khalid Khannouchi ran the Great North Run as well this year?
Supernatural deity? You'll regret your sarcasm when you get near the end. Good luck with that.

Although the Halls have obviously been preoccupied with the adoptions, Ryan's average pace of 5:19 for 13.1 is hard to comprehend. Does anyone have any idea if Ryan is even training seriously? Sara has had some decent results this year so she gets the benefit of the doubt.
Oh yea?? Great for you adopting daughter and running a slightly above average half marathon time. Have you also broke the American record in the half marathon, marathon, and made 2 olympic teams before adopting 4 girls? Real talk tho, Ryan has done a lot for the running world in general, you can't hate on a sponsor, especially like asics for sticking with him.

Where are these Trails of which people keep speaking? And what exactly is happening there? Western States? I'm sure Ryan would have a shot.

I assure you, sub-1:10 is in the 1% of half marathon times run. I'd estimate that is "slightly above," slightly above average.
He's playing it cool. Letting everyone THINK there is something wrong with him. He'll show up at the start line for the US Olympic Trials Marathon, run 2:09:15, make the team and the message board will proclaim that he is back.
Let's look at his recent results:
LA Marathon-DNF. This was expected as it was on a Sunday. He wanted to get a good quick training running in before going to church. Notice where he stopped. He had 17 churches within a 3 mile radius of where he was. He looked relaxed up to that point.
Great North Run - 4:50 pace for first 5k. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that he is doing speed work and just shut it down after that.
1. He wasn't born at altitude, but he lived most of his life at altitude.
2. You cannot speak about the Kenyans doing the long hard runs 1 month out at 7,000 feet, because you don't know what they are putting in their body.
Do you see Vail or Coolsaet doing that?
I was surprised by how conservative some of the North American marathoners trained, because my idea of what was possible was colored by
what Ethiopians and Kenyans were doing. How many abnormal values out of the 12,000 samples belonged to Kenyan runners.
Hundreds of tests that were ignored or covered up. So the training model is based on a fantasy where hundreds of tests were ignored by the governing body.
I don't suspect a 26 year old Ryan Hall of doping to run 2:04-2:06, but it's obvious that his 32 year old body won't take the same level of stress.
Other athletes make the adjustment.

Happy Trails.
Sub-1:10 would at least be in the top .1%, if not perhaps the top .01%. Yes, it is a fine time (I cannot come close), but for a truly elite runner, as Hall has been, it is pretty slow.
Ackley is right: Salazar would seem to be a good choice for Hall.
I wish Hall the best, and hope he gets back on track. Before I forget: perhaps the 4:50-pace 5k split blew it for him? Recently, he seems to have a habit of going out too fast, and it would appear that he should tone it down and run as per his current fitness level. Perhaps he would have then put up a more respectable 1:05-1:06 time?
I have been saying this before and was voted down.
Ryan Hall's biggest mistake was taking the 2:04 he ran for face value. For the following Marathons he trained like one of these Kenyan 2:04 runners and burned out.
His 2:04 was basically worth 2:08 on a flat course with no wind.
But he wouldn't accept that.
I am sure he has come to terms with it now. But it may be too late.

It's time to stop posting on LRC about who is or isn't an elite runner and do more substantive things with our lives.
Ryan is too stubborn to get help where he needs it. That is his downfall.
Is it true that the great marathoner Ryan Hall has only won 1 marathon in his life? And even that race included no foreigners?
@youreahero: I don't know what you mean when you say "real talk, tho?" were the first 2 sentences sarcastic or not genuine?it looks like the median half marathon time in the usa is around 2 hours. See link from a few years ago:http://www.runningusa.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.details&ArticleId=333I'm proud of my time. and i'm not bad-mouthing Ryan Hall, just saying that if I was in that race i probably would have finished ahead of him. Which might be similar to all of the college kids who were handily defeating Alan Webb in 1500's and 5k's a few years ago when he was trying to make a come back. Further, I am working my buns off with my own business to support my family, our lifestyle and myself while running in the mornings and evenings I'm lucky to get 65 miles a week in. I don't get appearance fees for running "slightly above average" times nor do I get the other perks of an elite. He's certainly performed well to get where he is now, and I'm not discrediting that. I would root for him in a race to this day.....I know the Halls have activated the running culture in the States and are, in general, good for the sport. In my humble opinion, I think Hall has one more chance at showing he belongs in the elite running world, and that's by Qualifying for the olympics and giving it a good shot once he gets to rio. But most who know running think he's 'done' or will DNF at mile 12 of the olympic marathon should he make it there.

Good post here, never would have thought. It is interesting how your comments demonstrate how relative running is. For Hall, 1:09:38 is slow, but for you, especially in your situation, it is a good effort.
Wow, I can only imagine being able to say that I could have possibly beaten Hall in a race. You are a good runner. Keep at it. What is your PR? Do you have a specific goal in mind? Do you think 1:05 is possible for you? I enjoy hearing about runners who are "ordinary people" and are perhaps close to being "there."
I never understand why people try and take this standpoint. Obviously Ryan Hall was faster than anyone posting on here. That doesn't mean he is free from criticism when many people here can put up a better time than what he ran today. The writing has been on the wall for awhile now. Ryan Hall has been done for years. Old news

Do you see Vail or Coolsaet running sub-2:10? What makes you think THEY are clean any more than a Kenyan? You have no idea what they're putting in their body either. You expect me to believe that Kenyans have to dope to run 2:06, and Ryan can do it on pure natural talent BUT can't do the same training?
YOU MORONS!!!!!
HE WAS RUNNING SUB 1:05'S AT ALTITUDE IN 2008 IN WORKOUTS!!!!
THIS IS HORRENDOUS!!!!
