By virtue of having a single WC medal, he's one of the best American milers in history. He could retire today and would be ranked behind very few. Jim Ryun will remain American number one until someone breaks a World record or gets an Olympic Gold, but who is definitively ahead of Centro at this point?
Maybe Marty Liquori by virtue of his 2 #1 1500/mile world rankings.
Jim Lightbody is the clear #1 us middle distance guy. Who else has 2 olympic golds at 1500m, a gold and silver at 800mm, and a steeplechase gold? Does it really matter that the times wouldn't win most state meets:)
