There's something else, something Conte probably doesn't know about. Two things really:
1) something that allows athletes to be severely underweight without the metabolic/injury consequences. However it doesn't work long term so those using it rarely race, and often yo-yo between great and terrible.
2) a very effective stimulant. The crackdown on ephedrine as a meth precursor eliminated amphetamine-like PED's and athletes have been looking for a substitute ever since.
They could get ephedrine if they wanted to.
Amphetamine salts, ritalin, and even meth come in many forms and are more than a better enough substitute for ephedrine. Modafanil is good too but not the same as those.
I would imagine they are using something like modafanil.
If, in fact, athletes are able to use injected epinephrine (adrenalin) without failing a drug test--this is very, VERY potent stimulant. I've had epinephrine injections before, due to asthma attacks.
While the experience was not "pleasant"--an extreme version of the fight or flight response, lasting for an hour or so (subcutaneous injections yield the longest half-life, followed by IM injections; both of which are far more prolonged than IV injections or inhalation) is nothing like the high one gets with the "fun" stimulants amphetamine or cocaine--I did feel like I possessed superhuman strength, determination and focus.
