A book an athletics I read over 30 years ago contained a chapter headed "Lasse Viren: flying by transfusions?"
Even back then they knew.

Nonsense.
Viren had no responsibility to quell insecurities of others, nor the idiot thoughts of morons.
To the contrary, taking advantage of them was greatly to his credit.

It's in a book so it must be true!

Don't get this. It was not illegal at that time. It was a found and proven up and coming science. His country's doctors and researchers wrote and put out their actual findings at the time! Why would he not blood dope? Of course they would, as would coaches today in the same time setting. Oh and I really like the claim he ran such low mileage. COME ON you guys are all distance runners! How often have you heard that claim. This is all a joke, he would not have even continued running if he was of todays world. The elites today would have sent him home to compete against the high schoolers of the world. To many suspicious claims and non claims, all in one, I think.
From memory, blood doping was at the very least considered to be doing something artificial to improve performance and unsportsman-like and I think it did become illegal at some point in Viren's career.

No, even back then they did not knew, because there is a questionmark at the end. Rumours, just rumours. Have you thought that Lasse was not the fastest during his olympic runs, but he did cross the finishing line first. How is that possible? Think about it. Time vs. distance, distance vs. time.
I might report some things from his most recent book (it´s Finnish) tomorrow, or some other day, if interested.
I can't believe that, 40 years later, people are talking about this. Unlike Cierpinski, who was cheating according to the rules at-the-time, even if Viren did blood dope, it wasn't illegal. I'm not sure it's ever even been proven to be helpful.
I think world class athletes do what they can -- hopefully within the rules -- to maximize their performance, so if he tried blood doping and his competitors didn't, it's not his fault.
Besides, if anyone can watch any of Viren's four gold medal races and think that anyone else was going to win, blood doping or not, they're crazy. He just had "it" those days.

Well, it is because nowadays nobody really cares to discuss was some Kenyan or Ethiopian on dope or not - they have destroyed the distance running. They have this advantage over other people, genetics, altitude, only change to get money... Mr. Rupp was close to them, but now we have to think, was HE clean or not? Was it just a dream? We (non-Africans) have Evan Jager, who else is capable to compete with the Africans?
Another point of view, who else has done the same that Viren did? Bekele was very close, but was "only" second after El Guerrouj in the Athens 5k. And the way Viren did it, it is unforgettable.
