I am a huge soccer fan. Used to play and coach. For the vets of the board, see my postings about the US Men's team and my predictions for them before the 2014 World Cup (they were dead on, as far as results).
Last night, I watched probably 2/3 of the game v Germany. It was the first time I have watched the women's team in probably 10 years. Midway thru the 2nd half, I texted a buddy with "Germany is the #1 team in the world? Wow, that's sad."
Here is what I saw. The US was the better team, but still relied on the old "boot it out the back and let the forwards run onto it" mentality. It's high school soccer tactics. They had SOME possession and build up, but it wasn't consistent (the thing is, when they did string some passes together, the Germans couldn't handle it and it created opportunities, but then the very next time they got touched the ball in the defensive it, it was just boot it down the pitch..that's coaching)
The German team looked slow, disorganized and couldn't put a decent shot on frame to save their lives. They honestly didn't even look that sound technically. I understand their top player was limited due to injury, but the fact that they had NO midfield at all would have neutralized that player anyways. I'd love to see a "shot chart" but I'd bet the German team had MAYBE 2 shots on goal. They were blasting shots from 25 yards out and not a single one came close to being on frame. Maybe that's a credit to the US defense, who seemed to be highly organized, but it's also a failure of your team to make runs/put yourself in position to get decent looks on goal. Compare it to the Argentina v Paraguay men's match last night and the darting runs and ball movement that created chances and plenty of goals (for Argentina at least)
