We'll have more detail on this, but Duane and had some tremendous comments on the 800 final saying he plans to take it out at WR pace at 600.

Give me a break. How many times have we heard this bunk from Solomon? Not buying it again.

If Solomon goes out in 1:14--or even 1:15--what would he have left for the remaining 200 meters? Enough to finish in 1:44.00 or better? Or would he stagger home having been passed by 5 or 6 runners in the last 50 meters?
this sounds like an excellent strategy if this were the 650m finals!
strategy that got Rudisha a world record, so might be worth a try.
i don't think he'll do it. he's trying to scare people so they don't follow him too closely, then he'll come through 400 in maybe 49.8.
dunno if he'll win though, he's probably the favorite still but not by much
When's the last time he didn't run world record place for the first 600?
lol lol lol lol wrote:

I asked him that not directly. Here's what he said post-race:
In the final it's going to go out more aggressive than that. I think I'm going to take it to a place where the only person who has been there is Nick," he said. Later when asked what that place was he said, "Coach Gray calls it the Twilight Zone. I'm going to go under 50 seconds the first lap and probably be under world record pace at the 600."
Duane explained his tactics, "It's just a way you can break the field. If they try and go with me they are going to break down....If I tie up at that pace I'm not going to tie up a lot. I've done a 700 going world record pace, not tying up at all."
When asked if that meant he had something special for the final he said, "I've got something special." Duane struggled this year with a problem with a nerve behind his calf, but said he never lost his base and it was "easy to get the speed back."Sunday's final should be a great one.
He's taken so many PEDs it's now actually affecting his brain functionality. What a twit.
Inspirational and intelligent interview, raising the stakes. We need more of this bracing bravado in the sport, fewer extrasensory medical slanders.

I hope he stays true to his word. It's been awhile since an American has done some ballsiness (or anyone for that matter). A PB race would be enjoyable to watch.
You have got to take risks to do something special. I like the talk. And it's not as if he didn't just go out in 24 yesterday.
So the guy who ran a 1.48 split at world relays is now ready to go WR pace for 700m.
I don't see this ending well.
I love these kind of boasts..Solomon is lucky to have made the final, he was backing up all the way and ran over 55.2 coming in.
If U.S. 800M running was not as weak as it is right now, he would have been ousted already with that tactic.
Seriously, has he run under 1:45 in a while?
The only person who has proven this year that he can run at such a pace didn't even make it into the final.
1:45.xx wins this thing.
"Duane Solomon Going to Take 800m Final to Place only Nick Symmonds Can Go, Plans On Being at WR Pace at 600"
It's been a while since I took English. What the hell does this even mean?
That strategy worked for Johnny Gray domestically but never internationally when medals were on the line. Solomon would be better advised when he does make a future USA team. In 2012, he hung back too far in a field that everyone knew what was going to happen. So, if he's going to talk the talk, he'd better get ready to let his feet do his talking for him. Coming off of an injury earlier this season, and wit high temps, I would think getting in good position to win the race in best case scenario and making the team in worst case would be awesome without the pre race psych job. Will Sowinski make it?

Inspirational? Perhaps.
Intelligent? So just what was intelligent about it? Whatever Duane Solomon thinks about himself, I will tell you right now if he is on WR pace at 600m he is finishing dead last or DNF'ing.
Maybe not PEDs in his head but extraordinary comments from someone who scraped into the final and DNF'd his last big pro race. Sounds like someone on the slide who is trying to convince himself things are on track with such "bracing bravado". We need more of this? In what way?
I'm getting so sick of hearing Duane talk about going for AR or WR pace, and then it never materializing. Can't you run it at WR pace without having to tell anyone else about it? Plus, he's nowhere close to WR shape, as far as I can tell.

Trust me, I'd be happy if it happened, too. But I doubt it will. American male runners never seem to try to frontrun or go for records anymore, which is in distinct contrast to the inspiring style of running employed by the American women, such as Molly Huddle, Ajee Wilson, Jenny Simpson, Emma Coburn, or even Shannon Rowbury, all of which either have ARs, international medals/DL wins, or, at the very least, very fast times to go along with this style.
We've been saying this for a while, but the American men have a lot to learn from the American women, who do NOT run like pussies.
