symmonds leads at bell
ooooooh so close
brandon lasater, an 800 guy from georgia tech, wins in 3:59.2
symmonds 3:59.69
he's slower than 2 high schoolers
Still a very good result and shows he is building fitness. I did not see the race but if he's still heavy he will be even better when he drops the pounds.
Man, how does a guy like Symmonds lose so much speed in just 2 years?
Seems like all the sceptics who've said that all his recent business ventures have been too distracting might not be wrong.
I know Symmonds is a big guy but he does kind of seem to have couple of more pounds packed on there than usual. Maybe I'm wrong but I've sort of noticed this being the case all season
Oh well, sub-4 is still better than a lot of the guys vying for a spot on the 800 squad this year can boast. Not to mention he's been training a lot with Wieczorek and Loxsom who are speed-oriented 800 guys, so maybe Symmonds has got a different blend of speed and endurance going on this year than in the past. Only time will tell I guess.
Symmonds is rounding pretty quickly into form. If he's still overweight, probably the case (definitely for the 1500m), and he's already run 1:46 and 3:59 after running slower than 8:20, I think, indoors, and a 1500m in maybe 3:49, he's made a lot of progress. He doesn't necessarily have to be in 3:34 shape to be ready for 800m at trials; he just has to be ready to break 1:44 in the finals, and probably not even that. 1:44.50 might even make it. I'm a lot more confident in him doing it now than I was a month ago.

But he is an Olympian.
99.9999% are not.
Now that we know that Olympian Nick Symmonds would not of won the State Meet in the 1600 I wonder if he could of beat Brazier in the 800. In his current condition I say NO.
I was at the race! Gotta love track - you can see 2 people break 4 min for the mile (not 1500 but I guess that's obvious) plus 3 hours of other events for a ticket price of $5.
This meet was in Nashville and it was 80 degrees and 98% humidity, which probably slowed times a bit.
In the women's 800m the winner ran 1:59 which was the 5th best time in the world this year. And she had no one near her in the second lap after the pacer dropped out.
In the women's steeple, the winner would have qualified for nationals but on the last water jump her toe slipped backwards and she face planted into the water. Completely disappeared for a second. I've never seen such a bad fall. She was stunned and took about 4 secs to get up and start running again then missed her qualifying mark by only 1.5 sec. Tragic, but real drama on the track.
That was a darned fun meet.
