Agreed-- don't engage or escalate, despite what might be a strong desire to do so. You're giving them satisfaction and/or potential reason to up the ante, which you don't want in these hair-trigger times.
I now live in a US suburb that is pretty runner-friendly/tolerant, but just in the last two weeks teens in cars yelled to frighten me or get a reaction. One did surprise me, so-- unfortunately-- they got what they wanted.
Hope things calm down for you, OP, and you won't have reason to change your schedule or routes. Thanks for the reminder that I have it lucky in that regard.
