I had the same reaction with both Desi's and Ritz's early front running in that it was all too soon. I know the commentators kept saying there was no wind in the beginning but I think it was all unnecessary. They both looked so incredibly strong that I feel tucking in for the first 35K may have at least slowed the overall pace down, conserved their energy and then give them a chance for the last portion of the race. I also wonder how much energy Desi wasted trying to catch back up on the first of the Newton hills. I've also felt at Boston that was the toughest of the hills after all the descent. Both Hug and McFadden said there was a very strong headwind, and they finished way before the runners.
They still may not have won yesterday but I think they both could have finished much faster if they'd have tucked in and waited. Still, gutsy push.
